Think of your local primary school, your children's primary shool, remember your own primary school or a primary school you trained or worked in. Imagine bombs raining down on it with little kids inside it, terrified, hurt and screaming.
It's horrific. This is real evil.
FT comments section this morning - saying what everyone else is thinking, right?
Too bad there's no opposition party that could run a 48 hour Youtube telethon program with 48 elected officials each programming one hour to point out the awfulness of the war on Iran. That would definitely not get any media or other attention.
For anyone going who has never read or heard of David Simmons, I am jealous that youβre hearing him for the first time. And heβs in his element in his hometown.

I am not saying that I could necessarily tell ChatGPTβs essay apart from my own studentsβ work. I am sure I couldnβt. It looks like a lot of undergraduate papers I have read. But that is the point. The problem with the βmindβ evinced by artificial intelligence is not that it is so convincing and brilliant that it renders human intellectual endeavor obsolete and heralds an unguessed-at future. That is for science fiction. The problem is the opposite. Itβs the same kind of slapdash, incurious writing that routinely makes grading a chore. What ChatGPT produces is unreliable, drab, useless, and off topic. It is a thoughtless mishmash blended together out of middling consensusβnot the creative attention I am asking students for. It is incapable of making (what is recognized in the college classroom as) an interpretive claim, and poor at introducing evidence. To be fair, a B+ paper written by AI is not likely to have grammatical errors or spelling mistakes, but I would expect more from literally any student who did the reading, came to class, met with me, and turned on his or her brain.
This is the point I've been wanting to make, made so well by Prof. Ben Parker.

You had to consider quite carefully about if you were going to attack and what it meant to attack.
I was sitting in with a D&D game last night and the topic of THAC0 came up. I'm not a 1st ed. guy, so I had to look it up. And, I will tell you, I'm kind of all for it. It seems like, as with everything about the game, the combat has been streamlined to the point where it's not even combat anymore.
That must be a lot of legal pads. Do you, by any chance, keep those when you are finished?
Yes, I know. Naive, like I said.
