This last year turned out quite fruitful for my 'wider-audience articles' writing. Here's my latest essay, this time responding to an interesting call in SPAM magazine on the 'dreamification' of the internet. www.spamzine.co.uk/post/essay-s...
C'mon people, we can do better. It can't take bloody 14 months to revise a manuscript. I reached a state where I don't even remember anymore what my proposal was. And yes, sadly, this in philosophy seems to be a 'quick' one.
Kind reminder: if you accept a review for an article, review it within a reasonable timeline! Ideally, meet the deadline assigned by the editors (or 'almost'). It took me 9 months to hear back from the first round cos #reviewer2, and now I have been waiting another 5 months for the R&R🙃.
Can you be aware of nothing while you are asleep? I wrote a new piece on dreamless sleep experiences for @theconversation.com
theconversation.com/can-you-be-a.... I also talk about some of the exciting findings from @tecferrer.bsky.social's research.

Interested in dream hacking and altered states of consciousness? You can now read two short texts @adrianaalsa.bsky.social and I wrote for the audiovisual installation APARICIONES, exploring these themes! To find them, explore the interactive archive at: apariciones.net
It was so refreshing to collaborate in this artistic project on liminal states of consciousness by Paula Ábalos (installation in Leipzig, Germany). I contributed a written piece on 'Dream hacking', which you need to find by interacting with the website :)

What has been your experience?
So today I feel I findally 'grew up' by rejecting a paper that had some potential but needed A LOT of work. I still ofc, gave them extensive and detailed feedback and suggestions of points that should be addressed
I feel that I was seeing myself in those authors and I was like: ok, you just might need some guidance; I'll give it to you. But that's not the job of a peer-reviewer.
This only ended in subsequent rounds in which I ended up rejecting the paper 'cos it was still failing to address pressing concerns, or in 'Frankenstein' papers that didn't make much sense.
I used to pride myself on not rejecting articles unless they were utterly bad, but after years of peer reviewing, I had realised this wasn't the best. Oftentimes, I ended up giving 'major revisions' to what was indeed a 'write a new article', and I don't think it was fair to the author(s)
#AllEyesOnMadleen

so preventing participation by making events "in-person only"gets in conflict with any statement about "access", "inclusivity" &"diversity". And if we learnt anything from COVID, it is that, while online/hybrid events might not be ideal, having online alternatives is cost-effective and manageable
(leaving aside considerations about climate change and whether it's justified to travel to the other side of the world for a 2-day conference)
I'm the 1st one to prefer in-person gatherings to online ones: easier to mingle, make connections and make the most of the experience. And in an ideal world, these should be promoted, but not everyone has access to funding/nor the possibility to travel anywhere, anytime
Thread: I keep coming across academic conferences with these two contradictory statements: "in-person only, no possibility for online presentations" and "free to attend, to broad participation and accessibility".
