I've worked in NZ universities and CRIs for nearly 30 years, and there's been maybe 5 of those years without a round of budget panic or outright redundancies.
After every round of belt-tightening they cut off the end of the belt so it never gets loosened back up.

I arrived on the shores of Aotearoa over 12 years ago. Every year there have been cuts to public research and redundancies of public researchers. I cannot overstate how dire this is and how much of our future we are losing.
Public research is one way we look after one another. It matters. #NZPOL

Its been a long ride, and I can't tell you how much it really, really is awful.

Almost 15 years of my MiL's dementia adventure will finish sometime in the next few hours.

For those who haven't noticed yet: dementia sucks.
But care home staff, ED staff, hospital staff - from the doctors all the way up to the cleaners - are incredible, lovely and any govt undervaluing them needs to get in the sea (off the sth coast of Welington).
