A lovely Roman mosaic showing floral motifs surrounded by a twisted guilloche border. Oh! And there's a fish! The colour scheme is white, black, grey and red.
This is where it started everyone!
Our "Floral Mosaic" was discovered in 1960 (don't ask how π¬π±). This led to 8 years of excavation during which the Palace was gradually revealed.

Large quantities of roofing tile and brick were produced by the #legion for use at the fortress.
From about AD 100, many were stamped with the legions title, official use only. The kilns were probably located near the River Usk. πΈ My own.

Black and white floor mosaic (one of many) at Fishbourne Roman Palace, at Fishbourne just west of Chichester, West Sussex, UK. Geometric shapes include large 3D shapes such as 3D boxes and other elements such as decorated crosses (all arms same length), with a two-line frame in black around the space/room within the palace. Some damage and missing tiles are evident, but it is perhaps 10 feet by 10 feet large, and the whole museum is housed in a permanent hall to protect it from the weather. There is a further room with floor mosaic remains to the top of the photo. Glass windows to the right give views of a large internal garden to this huge villa.
Having visited @romanpalace.bsky.social close to Roman city #Chichester or #NoviomagusReginorum at the weekend, I have fresh mosaic photos for #MosaicMonday!! There are some really great mosaics at this site, and clearly from the times Romans were living in Britain⦠can recommend the museum!!

A Roman mosaic in black and white. It's a disaster. The mosaicist clearly had no real plan for what they were trying to achieved and essentially busked the entire design. It's all over the place. It's the mosaic equivalent of when you start a sentence but have no real idea what it is you're trying to say.
Woops. π³

Not that dissimilar (in its sequence of Aeneas, Dido and Ascanius on galloping horses) to the same hunting scene at Low Ham in Britannia. A common model? #mosaicmonday
