Meanwhile really good films are being missed because they don’t have a marketing budget.
That’s why I like @letterboxd.social because the crowd-sourced reviews average out, to cut through the marketing noise.
It’s democratic what rises to the top. It’s a free ‘film school’ recommendations engine.
It creates jobs but over time it might turn people away from the cinema. Audiences will become cynical. It’s the Netflix effect hitting cinema. Eventually people will assume things are probably mediocre and over-marketed, so they won’t bother buying tickets.
People are calling the trend “aesthetic trash cinema”. Make it look great visually, sell it hard, but story is crap, it says nothing, it’s only meant to be watched once, in the cinema. Money. Bosh.
