🚨 preprint alert!

Check out our revised manuscript out on bioRxiv, where we strengthen the link between D1-dependent dopamine signaling in the anterior insular cortex and the control of anxiety.

Daniel Huber, Université de Genève, will present a talk on "Cortical circuits involved in voluntary action".

Abstract:
"We will present how he uses closed-loop optical brain–machine interfaces combined with single-cell optogenetic manipulations to interrogate the cortical circuits underlying goal-directed action. Using two-photon population recordings, we find that cortical activity preferentially encodes behavioral goals rather than detailed kinematic parameters, and that this representation is strongly driven by thalamic input. Together, these findings suggest that cortical activity primarily serves to guide action direction and intent, rather than to issue direct motor commands."

New paper alert! 🚨

We found that the brain's compass is remarkably stable at two scales

1️⃣ the system maintains its internal organization for weeks
2️⃣ It "remembers" its orientation for weeks, even after a single visit

This may be key to how the brain aligns its other maps.

Hierarchical encoding of natural sound mixtures in ferret auditory cortex To parse foreground and background sounds, the auditory cortex of humans and ferrets share a similar hierarchical organization, but the underlying computational mechanisms are fundamentally different.

Happy to see my last PhD paper (finally!) out 🥳
Cross-species ferret vs. human, fUSI vs fMRI, round 2!
Is the human cortical hierarchical gradient in background invariance also found in ferrets? Yes!
Are they supported by the same mechanisms? No!

Color-coded mean firing rate maps of place fields detected in the forth trials (left, sorted by the location of place fields peak) and back trials (right, sorted according to firing order in the forth trials) of all bidirectional cells recorded in the track with objects (top) or without objects (bottom). The color represents the intensity of the mean firing rate in a given bin normalized to the maximum mean firing rate (peak rate) in each direction. Note that in the CP condition, the mean firing map in one direction is the mirror image of the mean firing map in the other direction, indicating strong distance coding.

Happy to share our new paper with Mathilde Nordlund and Julie Koenig out @currentbiology.bsky.social. We used virtual reality in mice to study hippocampal distance coding. Our results suggest a primary contribution of grid cells to distance over cue-dependent place cell coding.
