5 postdocs just advertised: Come work with us at the LSE Global School of Sustainability @gsos-lse.bsky.social. With 150 people working full-time on the political economy of decarbonisation, you'd be joining the largest research community on the topic.

I wrote about just transition in Brazil for UNRISD - TLDR, lots of different impacts, from new kinds of energy, from old ones, with different implications for different groups (some hit urban, some indigenous, some quilombolos, some labor) www.unrisd.org/en/library/p...
Really interesting and plausible parsing of who was on which side of a roadmap to phase out fossil fuels at COP30
Not an expert, but googling around a bit shows them as another producer with clearly limited oil reserves and low quality of much of what's left. Would love to hear from someone who was at COP30 about where they were diplomatically.
Right, othersβ leverage over them. I think Brazilβs position ended up being shaped by its leadership role in the COP and its plausible for Australia too
One of the levers on producer states is that some of them (e.g., Colombia) recognise that they have small and declining reserves and/or high costs of production which mean that their production has an end date. But for the big producers like Saudi Arabia, the only real lever is on the demand side.
Great to have the book out there...110 authors, it's a Great Leap Forward in our understanding of why we're failing to act on climate change.

Fascinante
In my 2007 book on Brazilian environmental politics, we said the same thing in the first chapter: there are few countries where the pro-environment and anti-environment forces are both so strong. Neither always wins.
A useful reminder about the heavy environmental and social costs of the existing energy sector www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Many thanks to the author of this piece, FermΓn Koop, published by @dialogueearth.bsky.social , for the opportunity to share some comments on the participation of Latin American countries in the COPs and the impact of their regional groups, such as AILAC.
