Dear Shabana,
I notice today that you referred to me in your speech on immigration at the IPPR think tank.
You said: β€œA party leader should not be on the beaches of France encouraging people to
make a perilous crossing on small boats.”
I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised especially after the hateful Labour campaign in Gorton
and Denton, but this is just the latest in a string of lies peddled by a discredited Government
who intentionally fan the flames of racism and division.
When I went to Calais, I was not there to encourage people to travel to the UK. I was there
to see at first hand the suffering your Government and successive Governments have done
in demonising migrants in a pathetic bid to pander to the base instincts of Reform and the
flawed strategy of Morgan McSweeney.
As you will know, if you even bothered to research my visit instead of taking Reform talking
points, I was there to witness the brutality of families living in tents in freezing temperatures. I
filled water tanks and picked up litter.
What that visit did do is confirm my belief that if we are to smash the boat gangs and stop
the boats, we need to offer safer and managed routes for migrants to come to this country.
Showing compassion as a politician is not a crime. In fact, we need to see much more of it.
It reminded me of a young MP who in October 2015 spent three days in Lesbos helping
migrants fleeing war-torn Syria. She posted videos on X, talked about handing out water and
croissants to refugees and food parcels.
When she returned to the UK, she wrote a very moving piece in the New Statesman. She
said β€œwe have to work with our European partners and create new, safe, and legal routes for
refugees to get to Europe. We cannot abandon them to their fate, left as prey for smugglers
whilst risking death on the seas.”
She said β€œmaybe we can make ourselves feel better by saying no-one is making them get on
the boats. And again, the Home Secretary is not entirely wrong when …

Dear Shabana,

Let's clear some things up around migration and remember we're talking about people's lives.

Is "deliverism" dead? Lawrence gave his first take on Iran at the weekend and will return to it later this week.

What is "deliverism"? Is it dead? And what would its death mean for progressive politics?

This essay (kindly published by @samfr.bsky.social) is my attempt to trace five years of trans-Atlantic debates, to set out what I see as the stakes, and to analyse where these arguments have now gotten to:

How Trump/USA Is Helping Putin Kill Ukrainians The Patriot Case Study

Hello All, Just sent out this piece, a case study of how Trump has gone to great lengths to help Russia in its campaign to kill Ukrainian civilians and freeze Ukrainian cities. Trump was deliberate and, sadly all to effective. The USA is helping Putin now. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

How one country stopped a Trump-style authoritarian in his tracks What Brazil got right that America got wrong.

The Brazilian political system is, structurally, very similar to the American one. But when they elected a Trump-style authoritarian back in 2018, their Congress and Supreme Court actually fought back.

I went to Brazil to find out why. And what I learned surprised me.

People need to understand what happened strategically in 2025. The US switched sides, helped Putin a great deal, which also encouraged the Chinese to help Putin. And Ukraine fought on, inflicting massive casualties on Russia and taking the war to the Russian economy.

Weekend Update #171: The Week Trump Helped Putin Commit Two War Crimes Negotiating Over Ukraine, Europe Must Be There; US Sanctions Again, Really?

Just sent out my free weekend update. The big, tragic, story of the week is that Trump was a direct accomplice in helping Russia commit arguably its largest war crime so far--a double mass attack on Ukrainian civilian life. Trump provided cover for Russian murder. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Is the President of the USA acting like an "Agent of Influence" for Putin? What Does It Mean When Trump Openly Admits To Protecting The Russian Dictator?

I also took out of paywall this piece from May, in which I wondered why Trump was constantly acting like a Russian agent of influence even after the Russians humiliated him time and time again. I hope we do not have the answer. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Russian terrorism continues.
Terrorists never stop on their own. They can only be stopped. And only by force.

The attack lasted all night. Drones, ballistic missiles, anti-vessel missiles. Russia's goal is obvious: to deprive Kyiv and the central regions of power as much as possible.

Weekend Update #168: The Trump-Putin Plan To Torment Ukraine Reaches A Crescendo Ukraine Gets A New Defense Minister; Russia's Slow Crawl

Russia is killing Ukrainians every day: burying us under the rubble of our homes, killing us on our streets, burning us alive in our cars. In offices, cafes, churches, kindergartens, and hospitals. Every day. All the time.

It happens so often, it doesn’t even make the news anymore.
