|: Been away for a couple days (and am in the process of deactivating my presence everywhere but here) due to an overwhelming impending sense of doom—I’ve not been doing great(!)—but will send all replies and sort extra stuff tomorrow.

The mumble forces a laugh from Jen’s lips, despite her attempt to stifle it, and it pours out of her all the same.

“Yes, aren’t we all? They’re well-documented, as it stands.”

“Crashed and burned, more like. Tony seems to have a penchant for tarnishing every good thing he has built, at some point or another.”

Truth be told, Jen felt completely in the dark.

“I have no doubt.”

“I was under that impression too, which is why I ask if you know anything about the rumoured buyout. I haven’t had anything from him.” She pauses, then reconsiders. “Maybe I’m overreacting, I’m sure he’d call if he needed anything.”

“Not sure how he’s handling it all, recently, if I’m honest. There’s two ways it could go; he extends a personal invite to a few people—and, if you get one, I surely won’t—or there’ll be a ball or something unnecessarily gauche that he’ll summon us to.”

“If I’m honest, I have been so swamped with work lately that I’ve not really been keeping up with everything everyone’s up to. And while it isn’t my specialty per se, I’m a little wounded he didn’t reach out.”

She’s barely got her foot in the door when she spots Kurt, eager to greet her, and says hello with a warm smile before turning her attention to filling the largest void in her life that morning: coffee.

“What’re you getting,” she asks him, setting her purse down, “have you already ordered?”

“I wish other attorneys said that as quickly as you did,” she chuckles, fond of her own joke. “You know, I hear a rumour that Tony’s on the verge of a big buyout. You don’t know if that’s true, do you?”

And what he does, is VERY nice.

She pulls on her coat and braces herself for the wintry weather outside her door, heading to the coffee shop with a spring in her step.

It was going to be a good day, she was sure of it.

She extends her thanks for helping her view things differently.

“Hey!” She says, placing her glass down on the table with enough force that it’s audible. She raises a finger at Jan, pointing, accusatory. “That’s my job. You worry about me, I worry about you. That’s the deal, no? What are friends for!?”

“I’ll see you in the morning, Kurt.”

She gives him a brief hug before taking her leave, parting ways with a smile that says more than words could express.

Until they meet for coffee.

“Absolutely. I’ll be there.”

Jen was, admittedly, caught off-guard by the Wasp’s eagerness to finish the glass so quickly. Were they in a rush? Had she missed a memo?

“…glad,” she says, studying her friend, subtly looking for any chink in her armor.

She supposes that much is true.
