It's been a great first two days hosting the @igsoc.bsky.social symposium on ice streams and outlet glaciers. We've had excellent talks & posters spanning both contemporary and palaeo glaciology, and a sunny icebreaker in the courtyard of Durham Castle. βοΈπ₯ Looking forward to tomorrow's excursion!
Enjoying a glaciology group writing retreat this morning, with excellent cake provided by @hollywytia.bsky.social! βοΈπ°βοΈ
Hello Bluesky! π This is the first post from the glaciology group at @geogdurham.bsky.social - give us a follow to hear about our icy research activities and adventures! We had a mini conference today to catch up on the brilliant range of contemporary and palaeo research by members of our group! βοΈ
We are now accepting submissions for the Annals of Glaciology special issue on 'Ice Streams and Outlet Glaciers' and welcome contributions from both palaeo and contemporary perspectives. The submission deadline is 30th September 2025, and you can find out more here: www.igsoc.org/ice-streams-...
π’ The final ArcticDEM & REMA release is here - and it might be the last. Funding cuts put vital polar data at risk. Help us rally support: take the survey! πhttps://z.umn.edu/pgc-dem-survey #PolarScience #SavePolarData
excited to say that the first paper from my PhD has just been published! Click the link below to read more about the rapid re-acceleration of Greenlandβs largest outlet glacier, Jakobshavn IsbrΓ¦ (Sermeq Kujalleq) π¬π±π§

A reminder that abstract submission for the @igsoc.bsky.social Symposium on Ice Streams & Outlet glaciers @geogdurham.bsky.social closes 24th March. We're looking forward to presentations from both contemporary & palaeo perspectives to encourage cross-pollination of ideas & research approaches! βοΈβοΈπ§ͺ
The #Greenland Ice Sheet is cracking open more rapidly as it responds to climate change.β―β―Research led by @tomchudley.bsky.social from @geogdurham.bsky.social found crevasses had significantly increased in size and depth in just five years π bit.ly/4aKE8l7
@leverhulme.bsky.social #DUresearch
We analysed 8,000 maps and found crevasses are increasing in size and depth.
A lovely article about it in @insideclimatenews.org courtesy of @bberwyn.bsky.social with thanks to @glacierbytes.bsky.social, Xavier Fettweis, and Ken Mankoff.
Our new paper is out in Nature Geoscience! In an ice-sheet-wide 3-D inventory of crevasses in 2016 and 2021, we find that crevasses are growing in response to ice acceleration on short timescales. @durham-university.bsky.social @byrdpolar.bsky.social @leverhulme.bsky.social
Would be great to be added Dan, thanks for organising!
Between 2018 and 2021, KIV Steenstrup Nordre Bræ in Greenland retreated 7 km and quadrupled in velocity. It's now in the top 10% of glaciers contributing to Greenland's discharge. Our new paper in Nature Comms:

Between 2018 and 2021, KIV Steenstrup Nordre Bræ in East Greenland retreated 7 km and quadrupled (!!) in velocity. Read our new preprint >>
New article from the @ERC_RESPONDER team! We present observations of a supraglacial lake drainage in a fast-flowing sector of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Read it in PNAS -
π¨ New Paper π¨ We show how you can use #UAVs to extract high-resolution velocity fields of glaciers and ice sheets with no ground control! #dronesforscience
Available #OpenAccess in @EGU_TC with thanks to @ERC_RESPONDER @CambridgeESS

#UAV orthophoto of @ERC_RESPONDER 2018 basecamp at Store Glacier, Greenland. Camp is affectionately (and appropriately) named 'Lakeside', visible as orange dots on right. #dronesforgood
Final @scottpolar student talk of #IGSBBM2018 - @rebeccadell1 discussing the impact of NDWI thresholding on detecting ice shelf hydrology
More @ERC_RESPONDER results from Samuel Cool at #IGSBBM2018 - modelling subglacial hydrology at Store Glacier. Integrating data and modelling! @igsbbm2018
Excellent week in Oban on the @NERCscience #UAV training course. Flying, robotic theory, and operations advice. Looking forward to put into practice! #dronesforgood
Tomorrow we begin flying to Greenland for the 2018 @ERC_RESPONDER summer field campaign! Here's the latest look at our field site at Store Glacier, taken yesterday courtesy of #Sentinel2. Fingers crossed we can catch the western lake before it drains...
Looking forward to sharing work at #EGU2018 today! Learn how we created this high-res ice velocity map: poster X2.55, 1730-1900.
I'm also a co-author on Antonio Abellan's talk on glaciers and point clouds: room N2, 13:30-14:00.
Great article - reinvigorated to get better at Jupyter after reading!
Great day learning about #scicomm #infographics from the #infohackit workshop - here's our effort! @bruce_steel @chowlandf1 #CEEDA2018
Opportunities to join our group () investigating fast ice flow in Greenland. Please share!

2. Two PhDs using fibre-optics () and precision radar ()
#UAV imagery of the #RESPONDER_ERC camp in Greenland, four days apart. Note the camp has moved downstream, and the dramatic surface changes from melt!
Come join our research group on the #RESPONDER_ERC project - 3.5yr PhD tracking heat through ice boreholes, including 2 field seasons on the Greenland Ice Sheet!
Stretching into polar humanities with great talk about Fridtjof Nansen and history of the @RGS_IBG by @Peter_R_Martin
