In 2014, I visited eastern DRC, where @msf.org teams were treating sleeping sickness - the only available treatment was a drug so toxic it killed 1 in 20 patients. In 2026 I'm so proud that, thanks to @dndi.org, patients can be cured with a single dose of a groundbreaking new oral drug, acoziborole.
Congrats to our partner @dndi.org on the approval of their drug acoziborole to treat sleeping sickness! 🎉
This neglected disease could now be cured with a safe, single-dose pill, rather than complicated, toxic treatments that have previously been used.
#NTDs are uncommon but may be present in #Europe, as mobility & #climate change expand vectors habitat: poor #access to #medicines may leave vulnerable patients untreated & increase risk of local transmission

Creo que en algunas disciplinas de la ciencia se podría hacer mucho más. Es relativamente fácil y accesible una visita guiada en una catedral, una ciudad o un museo. Pero a ver a quien encuentras para que te explique la flora o fauna locales, por ejemplo.
Sobre la diferencia entre ciencia (disciplinar) y cultura científica. Y la segunda como excusa en el aula para pasarlo mejor

Should we accept that the same medicine is priced differently just because of the indication? We do not price a phone differently depending on whether it is for work or personal use. Nor do we price a tomato differently if it is for salad or tomato sauce. Why should it be different for medicines?
With the additional detail that we are observing a fragmentation in registration of brands associated to specific indications. Same medicine (semaglutide) with different branding (ozempic/wegovi) for two different indications (diabetes/obesity) and different periods of data exclusivity.

Un par de correcciones. La OMS no regula medicamentos, solo ha emitido recomendaciones para el uso de semaglutida. Además, la Lista de Medicamentos Esenciales incluyó en septiembre semaglutida para diabetes y obesidad, así que no es una novedad. www.who.int/news/item/05....

Cuando baje el precio ya veremos. Creo que es más una cuestion de la entrada de genéricos. El problema es que la indicación de obesidad es posterior a la de diabetes, de manera que puede que la protección de datos impida que los genericos de semaglutida se usen para obesidad durante un tiempo.
De todas maneras el concepto de "esenciales" está en pleno debate y trabajo entre investigadores.
Integrarlos en la WHO EML facilitará la defensa de derechos, la sensibilización, el lobbying politico, etc. En un par de años comenzarán a distribuirse los primeros genéricos. Si ya existe una sensibilización, será más fácil integrarlos.
