Stop 4 York Soc for the Preservation of Beers from The Wood is Loki DDH IPA by Half Moon Brewery at Valhalla. The impact of the wood is subtle on this one and certainly doesn't suppress the hops

Stop 2 York Soc for The Preservation of Beers from the Wood event is Acorn Cherry Porter at The Golden Slipper. Really well suited to wood. Cherries aren't over pronounced, subtle almonds + tannins and quite dry.

Very sensible. I've managed to make a service that isn't an official connection (within five minutes of each other). My good luck on UK trains can't last!

Stopping in Leeds for the beers from the Wood event (YORK) tomorrow & I've arrived earlier than expected. I wasn't going to call into Brew Society, Aire St but they have Sonoma Track on. Excellent.

Cycling The Tissington Trail in the dark? Brilliant. Manifold Valley - one of the original rail / footpath conversions is great too

Sounds like a great afternoon. Definitely no point taking a chance on a fixed ticket. I've seen some train managers show leniency but others charge the full standard single

Very nice. I never see it. I used to be able to enjoy it occasionally at The Forest Gate on Bell Common Lane when I had family in Epping. Not anymore unfortunately

York Soc Preservation of Beers from the Wood aren't on here yet but it's their Wood Cask Walkabout - York - Saturday 7th March 2026. The pubs are all excellent in their own right + the availability of a more unusual beer

Definitely. We should learn from Iraq. Can't see anything to gain by supplicating himself before Trump. Especially if UK consumers get hit with high energy / pump prices

A pint of bass in a branded glass with five pump clips with bass on them plus a bass advert in view and bass beer towels
Exterior view of the vaults Uttoxeter. Three storey brick building. The ground floor has bay windows with black bass triangles in them and a central doorway
A fortuitous delay - Managed to get an hour in Uttoxeter before the Crewe train. Time for a visit to The Vaults to enjoy their unparalleled selection. I'm conservative by nature so never at risk of options paralysis. I always eschew the guests in favour of The Bass which is excellent.

Yes, I've had that experience, because the tables are understandably close together they'll put a glass on the next table or a bag on the seat. No spatial awareness. Need to be more like de Garre where you're expected to share tables.

Great taste in pubs! Just jumped on the train unfortunately. I quite fancied another but work is going to be v hectic this week. Hopefully we'll catch up one day though.

One of the partitioned booths in the Victoria and Commercial with tiling, a mirror and green upholstered seats
A view of the victoria and commercial bar. Elongated with support pillars and large globe lights
A pint of Sussex Best on the bar with the handpump behind it
Exterior view of the victoria and commercial. Red brick and three storey building. Central entrance. The name is in gold lettering on black background
Enough time for a visit to the Victoria & Commercial before the train home. What a beautiful interior. Fantastic to see a pub reopened & revitalised in the context of a negative backdrop for the industry. A rare opportunity for me to enjoy Harvey's Sussex Best too

Fingers crossed. I've generally been lucky but got it in Morocco (I think it was the filthy, dirty fractured bowl they gave me as other people had the same meal and were ok). Nothing ruins a holiday more

Half a hazy IPA on the bar with the handpump behind it
Interior view of one of the off corridor rooms in the swan york. A leaded window is in the background and some stools, tables and upholstered bench seats
Exterior view of the swan york. A corner pub, two storey high, cream off white exterior
I've not had a Tun beer before. This Little Monster session NZ IPA is excellent. Highly recommended by the barman at The Swan, York and deservedly so.

Half a Northern Monk beer with the handpump behind it. A Pale beer
Half a turning point porter on the bar with the handpump behind it
A train in platform at Knaresborough station. There's a tunnel portal in picture and a station lamp with an old water tower behind
York via beautiful Knaresborough for a stop off in Blind Jacks. Bass isn't available today but they have Northern Monk Sup on cask and ultra local Turning Point Porter. Good beer quality and the pub was deservedly busy
