A brown penguin chick of some kind. It looks very much like a man in a suit. It is bedraggled and miserable
Made it to Friday but at what cost

Confocal microscopy photo
A black hole in the early universe? Sometimes I like to imagine that I operate a telescope, not a microscope π. The hole in the middle of the image is actually a blood vessel. The stars are astrocytesπ‘ in the human brain, interacting with beta-amyloidπ΅. The brain is from a donor with #Alzheimer.
it's beginning to look like a promise.
ππππWe're delighted to announce 3 new @royalsociety.org Fellows here in Zoology!
Dr Gregory Jefferis, Prof Claire Spottiswoode and Dr Marta Zlatic are all now FRS.
Many, many congratulations!

So we can now do mark-recapture and similar experiments with... tardigrades. π€― π§ͺ

Almost every line of this story would have been simply unbelievable a few months ago:
βPioneering cancer researcher;
β*Arrested* at airport in Boston;
βNow indefinite ICE detention in Louisiana;
β"Crime": not declaring some frog-embryo samples for research.
Read it.

Nelson from MRC LMB will explain how song birds learn their songs π¦
One of our undergraduate students in philosophy at Columbia, Mohsen Mahdawi, has been arrested by ICE at an immigration appointment (that he thought was for his citizenship application) in Vermont. I am standing up to say: hands off our students.
A package of research papers from the MICrONS (Machine Intelligence from Cortical Networks) consortium in Nature and Nature Methods provides a detailed map of mouse brain cell structure and connections, offering insights into how they relate to activity in the mouse brain. π§ͺ
LOL, this bag is perfect!
Perhaps parents will be hiding Easter potatoes this year instead?
Weβre going to annex Canada and invade Greenland but we canβt request return of an innocent man from El Salvador.
A crowd of people at a protest. One is holding a sign that reads βscience = progressβ
1/ Today, we publish the first of seven articles in a series exploring βScience Under Threat in the United Statesβ.
The authors discuss what they describe as the Trump administration's "assault" on science and scientists, and what the response should be. #StandUpForScience

AOC and Bernie in front of the rally crowd in Denver
Zoomed out crowd shot of 34,000 people in downtown Denver with Colorado mountains in the background
Tonight an unbelievable **34,000 people** gathered for our Denver rally to take on billionaires and win our country back.
This was the largest political gathering in Denver since Obama in 2008.
Also bigger than the 2024 DNC.
And the largest ever rally in Bernieβs career (and obviously, mine too).
Attracting talent, offering safe spaces is good. If it goes hand in hand with extra resources for science / education.
If not, these plans will create extra competition in already precarious systems.
The fact is, many European countries cut on research spending.

Changes to MSc, PhD and postdoc funding programs from π¨π¦ tri councils. Harmonization across councils, more awards, and new eligibility for international PhD and postdoc applicants!
I was funded by a t32 part of my PhD. This is just meant to cause pain. But itβs so difficult to explain to people on the outside how misguided (insane) this is.
Hang tight, help your friends- might be all we have for a while.
So the NIH grant terminations at Columbia turned out to be: -- all training grants (T series), which were all required to have extensive sections addressing diversity -- grad student and postdoc fellowships (F series) -- center and core grants (P series), including a cancer center, Alzheimer's center, diabetes center and more, and the vision core grant Michael Goldberg has been PI of for 17 years that provides shared facilities (machine shop, imaging, ...) for vision researchers -- a smattering of individual research grants, apparently targeting anything to do with covid, vaccines, or HIV, and including one study with title involving study of diverse tissues, i.e. with the verboten word diverse.
From my PhD advisor @kenmiller.bsky.social at Columbia. These are the grants that funded my PhD.
Last year, I was overjoyed to receive an NIH NRSA fellowship to study toddler brains and caregiving effects on memory at Columbia. Last night, my grant was terminated.

Today, along with 2,000 other NIH employees, I had to clear out my office π
It was truly the honor of my life to work with such incredibly passionate people focused on improving human health. Iβve never experienced a more positive culture where *everyone* cared about their job and serving others.
