From the standpoint of a data system that's handling millions of requests per second, you're absolutely right. Then you genuinely care about the data's representation in bytes and its impact on performance. I was just nagging because I found it in a system with hardly one transaction per hour! π

Iβm not sure why would anybody want to produce epoch instead of a readable timestamp? What advantage could one get from that? I understand if somebody says: βiβm processing millions of records per second so the data volume in bytes mattersβ but surely thatβs very limited.

What could justify storing date/time in a #database as an epoch? Not only do you make the data less accessible, but you also deprive the optimizer of your database of the ability to estimate the cardinality of the results correctly, if the epoch column is referenced in a predicate. #datasky
