Basically, it's big and fast enough to cause the light and the speed is what caused the sound. As it goes through the atmosphere it disintegrates due to the speed, intense pressure and heat. They are moving very fast - usually more than 40kms/second.

From the American Meteor Society - this was "undoubtedly a fireball", which is basically a meteor that's larger/brighter than usual. This one was probably the size of a softball for it to produce this flash. Most meteors are the size of a pea!
Also - Fireball Report Coordinator is a real job.
