Thanks for the kind words! Ha I think I've kind of made an academic career for myself by pointing out things that would have been glaringly obvious to 90s era grad students. The challenging part, at least for me, has always been articulating why that matters without just saying phallogocentrism.
An excellent reflection from @jjoque.bsky.social that draws out some fine, but crucial distinctions that I believe will be essential for political fights for a better world.
"Language [for Bender and Hanna] must be just real enough that its use can be objectively βwrongβ but also not too real that it can be described (and modeled) as a formal and computable system of reference."
this is great stuff and all of you should read it

"their metaphysical commitments to an unbreachable depth of human meaning and volition opposed to a machinic non-sense leaves their project ill equipped to address the harms they accurately identify"
yes! yes!
thank you! all your work on the topic has been helpful and inspiring!
this review of The AI Con from @jjoque is everything that i would want to say and everything that needs to be said to prevent "left/liberal" and "skeptic/intentionalist" from being conflated

Justin Joque offers a more radical critique of AI in this review, questioning both the intentional model of language and the liberal politics of Bender and Hanna's the AI Con:

Dear Friends! In the new year I really need to focus on writing a book and not posting; so I am going to temporarily take my leave of here. I'll be back and posting better than ever once this is all done. In the meantime it is very easy to find my email if you want to contact me. Adieu for now!
"China drafted landmark rules to stop AI chatbots from emotionally manipulating users, including what could become the strictest policy worldwide intended to prevent AI-supported suicides, self-harm, and violence. Chinaβs Cyberspace Administration proposed the rules on Saturday."

R and I biked 300 miles from traverse city to Kalamazoo over a few days and stumbled upon this historic gas station/cheese shop in the absolute middle of nowhere with the best backstory I've ever heard
There is a great trail that is now fully paved from Cadillac to Grand Rapids. We went north to Sutton Bay then west the Beulah. Then Cadillac. The leg from Beulah to Cadillac was sketchy but might have an easier time doing traverse direct to Cadillac. But otherwise an amazing route.
was blown away reading Turing last night
Turing was so far ahead of where most people even today are on these questions
