That's the thing though, in UK English "I'll have" or "I'll get" feels less polite because it sounds to (at least) my ears like a demand, not a request, even if it's said in the most polite tone possible. I assume the same doesn't apply in the states.

This is obviously just some kind of cultural barrier, but in the UK, if anything you're expected to be MORE polite and courteous to strangers than your friends.

If you were visiting a friend's house would you say "I'll have a glass of water, please" or "Can I have a glass of water, please?
