Day after tomorrow!
Day after tomorrow!
Does anyone know what's happening with NSF oceanography related panels? I think the physical oceanography one is usually early November; presumably it's been cancelled or delayed due to the shutdown. Is there any vague schedule now that they're open again? π
This paper represents an experiment with an 'extra' 2 days of ship time after our funded work was done. These observations were entirely designed by, carried out by, analyzed by and written up by our students. We PIs sat back and stood our watches on deck as told. They did an amazing job π€© π
If you're at COP this week, check out the ocean pavilion! scripps.ucsd.edu/news/ocean-p.... π

Our amazing students rand a whole class, including a week at sea, to teach other students about turbulence and mixing. π

Hard to beat the Declaration of Independence! (which is oddly relevant again)
Both sides of my #nokings poster for tomorrow. Hard to get more patriotic than the Declaration of Independence!
Hi friends - In the face of unprecedented cuts to the basic research science funding, climate scientists are staging an 100-hour live stream of why science matters. There will be many talks on all sorts of things (I'm Saturday at 12:30 PT). Please share widely! wcstreamathon.netlify.app. ππ§ͺ
True
Yeah Iβve been frustrated how she is portrayed as a sidekick when imho sheβs one our best hopes, more than him for sure
A huge national program on diversity in science, that I put a ton of blood sweat tears and effort into because I don't think good science is possible without those things, was canned this morning. How is wanting the best and brightest in the room problematic?!@&? π π π§ͺ
Academic institutions in the US need to seriously consider how they will support and protect their minority faculty during this time. The conditions we face are already hostile for most - targeted attacks and added barriers to advancement will push many to simply walk away.
Hi Alexis! I'd be super appreciative of any movies you were willing to share...
π Anyone have a favorite movie (simulation) of internal wave generation in the ocean? For pedagogical purposes. TIA!
Hang out and collaborate with the amazing Alejandra Sanchez-Rios, who is with us at UCSD now but will be starting as an assistant prof at UH in August. She is the best.
success, thanks!
Link doesn't seem to work....
Graduate student Kerstin Bergentz, who I have the pleasure to work with as a mentor, has written a great post about her recent trip to COP29. scripps.ucsd.edu/news/crude-r.... π
Did you also find the #Oceanography feed?
One of the nifty things here at the Scripps Pier in San Diego is that they make modern measurements *and* maintain the consistency of the 100+ year time series by still using a bucket every day :). ππͺ£ (shorestations.ucsd.edu)
π We're hiring! Seeking someone working on air-sea interactions to come join us at Scripps. Happy to answer any questions about the job or life at Scripps. apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/JPF03874
Watching the recent cabinet appointments makes me wonder if we have reached this phase of late stage capitalism
Our students at COP!
Hi, I'm a sea-going oceanographer and professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD. Website (mod.ucsd.edu). Orcid: 0000-0002-7690-1185. I'd love to be added here!
Remind me how to add people? Can I add myself?
Hereβs one of our awesome students explaining her work and why itβs fun and important. Iβm lucky to get to work with students like Taylor :)
