There’s honestly a ton of articles on this… one of the main reasons I posted was…. I want somebody to get to the bottom of it😂…. So if you have random questions let me know.
I’ll do some homework as well….
I think maybe a height issue…. When people ask me why I can’t continue on a light-rail track I always say …. “We’d rip it all down because we’re too tall”…. Although I’ve never actually looked into it…:-/
Centenary issue I’m not sure. Free standing Battery Electric is a thing though.
…There has been testing on some railroads where they have the converted Battery Electric locomotives mixed with Diesel units, and they use them according to the tonnage and grade they need to pull. So with this application, phase out old with new (kinda), while still in service.
Cheers
I’m just not sure it is cost effective enough for a bigger company to take on mass conversions like this, and swap out the Engine for Battery tech… But this would be a great usage of old locomotives if someone would take it on in a bigger way.
The propulsion of a Diesel Electric Locomotive is already electric. The Diesel engine we all hear roaring along, is basically a generator.
….There are a few bigger long haul, Road Locomotives i’ve read about, as well as smaller engines that predominantly stay in Ports and have been converted to battery electric.
Thanks for the post. Fascinating to read about the potential destinations and various contracts this older equipment has gone to.
As someone who works in this industry, it’s a shame there aren’t more locomotive conversions taking place.
