I keep coming back to you describing the ongoing march of technology in Accelerando by the average FLOPS/kg across the entire solar system

Inversely, those particles from the Sun are so energetic they have a "temperature" of ~800,000C but because there's so few of them they don't heat things in the conventional sense in the way hot atmospheric wind would

08.03.2026 14:31 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Those formulas still apply, its just we're talking about variations in pressures that are still very small in absolute terms - near Earth, the solar wind is around 3-10 particles per cm^3, whereas atmospheric density is in the realm of 10^25 (1 followed by 25 zeroes) per cm^3

Gravity waves are something different again, they're a wave in spacetime itself rather than a material, and very unusually can only exist when (to simplify) you have two objects orbiting each other.

It's possible the "sound" OP is talking about is a pressure wave in the solar wind rather than air

08.03.2026 04:54 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The difference can be important because the evolved response isn't completely faithful - recreating the "same sound" without recreating the same physical signal is part of how compression in formats like mp3 work

08.03.2026 04:51 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I don't think you would, since sonic booms only happen when you transition from below to above mach 1 - an object continously travelling faster would be loud, but not as loud as the boom

It can simultaneously be true that that's the upshot which benefits Musk, but also that he doesn't have the foresight to intentionally aim for it.

One of the most insightful explorations of human condition in the last few decades was on the back of four elephants standing on a turtle

Folks gassing up literary fiction and looking down their noses at sci-fi and fantasy because the former is "grounded in real human experiences", then you look at your average piece of literary fiction and the author's notion of how the real world operates is AT LEAST as fantastical as Narnia.

My brother, we had to explain a 1/3 pound burger was bigger than a quarter pound burger and still failed

Yeah, but then half of people will have less than average lived experience, so long as that's a bell curve. (It may not be) Ofc, "intelligence" probably isn't a single number/scale to begin with, but averages will apply if you assume it is

"There's a war on, let's party" is a perfectly understandable sentiment in mainstream films, but suddenly you have to sand it off when the stress and marginalisation is demographic oppression rather than a war

Don't think I'd seen the right hand one before, looks very elaborate and cool. What's it made of?

You almost always can't live up to the ideal of "self-documenting" code but rejecting the whole idea as a matter of principle is a new one

If you're doing the amount of verification you ought to be doing, you might as well just use an actual search engine, which gives you the traceability too

06.03.2026 19:37 ๐Ÿ‘ 3 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Getting the actual times from last week would be an error - "hallucination" is the term because the process an LLM uses to produce output isn't tied even that closely to reality, it's mostly just statistics.

06.03.2026 19:29 ๐Ÿ‘ 3 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

AIUI LLMs have no ability to verify anything, as in compare it to some authoritative source of truth. They repeat from what's in their data set, so a false statement will probably(!) be overwhelmed by other people saying the truth, but there's no actual comprehension there, only frequency

The client's dad definitely has the commodified/box-ticking attitude towards sex that motivates sex negativity, you could definitely see him seeing Inara as a proverbial vending machine for it rather than worthy of respect

06.03.2026 18:28 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Obviously everyone doing sex work and content should be respected, but lots of people in this verse don't see any difference between people coerced to work in wage slavery and independent workers/creators. Projecting prejudice about one onto the other seems pretty plausible

This was actually a documented thing at one point, but IIRC it was to push ads before they started to push Gemini. Can't find any news articles about it though.

.... Maybe I should have been using a different search engine

06.03.2026 16:06 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

IIRC it does lead to the slight absurdity that, "circular" spell effects end up as big squares
