Did you know that Simon's image appears in a series of relief portraits above the gallery doors of the House Chamber in the US Capitol?
Simon de Montfort's coat of arms, a red shield with a white lion standing on its hind legs, its forelegs stretched out in front. The lion's mouth is open showing its tongue. The lion has two tails.
Simon is often referred to as the father of modern parliament, advocating for representation of the towns and shires in parliament. His parliament of 1264 included knights, bishops, knights , town citizens and representatives of the Cinque Ports, a first for an English Parliament.
Simon was buried at Evesham Abbey and Evesham became a focus for pilgrimage as miracles began to occur in his name, although he was never formally recognised as a Saint. The cult that built around Simon became so strong that Henry III had Simon's body moved to an unknown location to deter pilgrims.

On that day, the forces of Simon De Montfort, Earl of Leicester faced Prince Edward's army and a bloody battle ensued that brought about the end of Simon in a very gruesome manner. Simon's body was mutilated, his head was claimed by Roger Mortimer and sent to Wigmore Castle as a gift for his wife!

#ObjectOfTheWeek Not so much an object as an event. This week it's the Battle of Evesham under the spotlight. On 4th August 1265, Evesham bore witness to a battle that was referred to by a contemporary chronicler, as 'The murder of Evesham, for battle it was none'.

While town charters are not uncommon, our charter bears the signature of Prince Henry. The Charter is 6 pages long and is heavily decorated with flowers and symbols relating to the town and its Royal patronage.
The Charter was granted by James I at the request of Prince Henry his eldest son. The Prince’s chaplain, Dr Lewis Bayley, also a vicar of Evesham, was a favourite of the Prince’s and that it was on Bayley’s persuasion that the charter be granted.
#ObjectOfTheWeek This week we're looking at the growth of Evesham. In 1604 Evesham was granted it's first Town Charter, this one is an updated version from 1605. The charter gave Evesham certain rights and privileges including raising taxes, holding a market and even the right to erect a gallows.

#ObjectOfTheWeek This week we're going bling with our Anglo Saxon burial. This beautiful collection was found by a Metal Detectorist and includes Saucer Brooches, shield bosses, and spears. The key object has to be this stunning Cruciform Brooch, followed by a string of gorgeous Amber beads.

Here's ours. These trees date from c.1930s/1940s. First one is made with dyed feathers and the second was made by a bottle brush manufacturer!

We have the legend of Eof the Swineherd, who lost a pig and while searching for it, saw a vision of the Virgin. The pigs are immortalised in a statue in town
and Tesco too, but apparently it's for a limited time, better get stocked up
I saw some in B&M at the weekend and I think Sainsburys sell it too!

#ObjectOfTheWeek Did you know we have our very own Medieval Map of the World? Drawn in 1390 by the monks of Evesham Abbey, it offers a unique perspective of the world. The original is at the College of Arms but we have a great reproduction in the museum. Can you guess where England is on the map?
⚠️ Pontypridd has been hit by devastating floods and our wonderful independent bookshop, Storyville Books, has seen much of its stock destroyed.

Due to the adverse weather forecast over the weekend and the cancellation of the Evesham Artisan Market, we will not be open on Sunday as planned. You can still visit us on Saturday from 10-5pm though!
