It was extremely transgressive in ways that people didn't even consider.
So was "The Sting", which is one of those great films people tend to forget. It leans hard into the expectations that came with the era.
Meanwhile Star Wars is seen as the death of the era where art was replaced with mindless escapism. But if Star Wars was mindless escapism, I don't think it would have caught on. It didn't help people forget their troubles, it showed them a huge win for a group of rebels against an oppressive regime.
I see some great movies in there, but I also see people patting themselves on the back and acting like they are "real" artists even though cynicism was the way of all movies back ther.
We've seen these cycles in art before. My Dad, like all film nerds of a certain age, romanticizes the "New Hollywood" era. I don't have that romanticism.
I've always had a disdain for art that seemed to view cynical perspectives as being more true to life. That they are showing hard truths that most people don't want to accept.
Not because I necessarily disagree, but because I found that outlook limiting.
This is why I hate Lynne Ramsay's films.
