Beloved lepidopterist Kevin dissects some noctuid genitalia in the Visible Lab, which he has decorated to look like the penalty box at a hockey game. He is wearing a Pens jersey and a hockey helmet while he looks thru the microscope.
I thought our new “visible lab” space felt like a petting zoo but @mothpotato.bsky.social had a much better idea

I am not sure what is going on at CPSC. Maybe they are cracking under the onslaught of current events like the rest of us? 🐜🐜🐜🐜

Western Monarchs Head into Spring with a Small Migratory Population
The final survey period of the Xerces Society’s Western Monarch Count ended recorded 6,464 monarch butterflies across 193 overwintering sites. This tally is 47% lower than the mid-season count of 12,2...
The late-season Western Monarch Count gives us a look at how many butterflies made it through the winter. The percent of remaining monarchs was typical, but coming from the 3rd lowest mid-season count on record, we hope these monarchs will have a good breeding season.

a spider is crawling on a yellow surface
Alt: a spider buries itself in yellow sand
I can only conclude that my recent decision to sparingly return to using the internet for news and social interaction was a massive mistake

I miss a lot of things from Ye Olde Twitter, but the amazing Asian art and macro-photography community was at the top of my list of things I'm sad about losing.

A brightly illustrated book with drawing of different insects on a green background. The title is Science-ology Entomology. Some of the insects are leaf cutter ants, fleas, caterpillars, and a dung rolling beetle.
Book #2: Entomology. A perfect book for kids interested in exploring careers in entomology. It's been out in the UK for a while, but has finally made it to the US. www.hachetteschools.co.uk/book/science...

What we bug lovers can do in the Year of the Horse? To admire the humble camel cricket! Known as Zao Ma in Chinese, which means “kitchen horse”, it is the mount of the Kitchen God Zao Jun, and brings good fortune & indicates plenty of food on the plates.
