3.5e had a playable "catfolk," but as 3.x assumed Greyhawk as a default setting as opposed to 5e's Forgotten Realms focus, they were explicitly a different thing than tabaxi (and basically unplayable due to level adjustment, like most of 3.x's more unusual races).

Context: Tabaxi first appeared in the 1981 Fiend Folio but weren't made into a real thing until that 1991 adventure which fleshed out their native jungle of Maztica, and they would only be made playable in the 5th Edition Volo's Guide to Monsters in 2016.

When Jeff Grubb and Tim Beach were writing about a race of cat people in Fires of Zatal in 1991 do you think they knew that 25 years later they'd be made playable to give D&D something for the furries?
