The Neoliberalism of Robert A.M. Stern The passing of postmodern architecture’s last living holdout marks the end of an eraβ€”and reminds us that we’re in a new, worse one.

wrote about robert am stern (rip) and how postmodern architecture worked to disguise the rise of neoliberalism www.thenation.com/article/cult...

Call me old-fashioned but in my day we took a second to think about whether we were going to kill someone.

I mean, it’s possible to detail stone on steel-frame beautifully; DC is full of it. But yeah, part of me is bracing for this to be more Skopje than John Russell Pope…

Recently I saw NZ's Beehive parliament in the flesh, driven by curiosity after @cinemashoebox.bsky.social's twitter parliament culture war. Basil Spence's bit is cool by itself but the way it plays with the classical form it extends is exquisite. Those trads have no idea what they are missing!

I hope he isn’t putting too much effort into a deal that won’t be worth the paper it’s written on! I hope he’ll only sign something he’s willing to see ripped up!

I agree with everything you’re saying Peggy. I think maybe this is a case of different expectations; mine were extremely low after Carney’s 1st statement, and I was surprised to hear him walk it back and acknowledge that this is an illegal war. I’m not surprised though with how equivocating he was.

04.03.2026 17:04 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

But of course it’s up to the lawyers and judges to decide if it violates the law. Who else? That said, legality and morality are 2 different things, and he’s been silent on the latter. But to come out and say that there is a prima facie legal objection is a step forward, and more than I expected.

I’m no Carney fan Peggy, but this sounds to me like pretty much the opposite of your interpretation: he’s saying the onus is on the US and Israel to justify this war, and in the absence of a compelling argument it violates international law.

We have been making it very easy for you to learn and build the best possible practices. Keep in mind that we do not sell this; timber-, straw- and earth construction do not fit into the logic of linear capitalist economics. It is different. Circular, open/free, independent, participative, useful.

Climbing Strawberry Hill Gothic architecture before Horace Walpole

Today in a new free post on β€˜All Old Strange Things’ I delve into one of my perennial hobbies - which is trying to track down early Neo-Gothic architecture pre-dating Horace Walpole’s Strawberry Hill open.substack.com/pub/drfranci...

Mortar. Likely the same mortar they are bedded with. The joint may have been pointed to within a 1/4” or so of the top, and a sealant of some sort applied over it, but I don’t see much evidence of that on the stone.

the fundamental disagreement about AI seems to be whether it should be liberating and augmentative or whether should be vampiric and supplantive. outside of the companies themselves I don’t understand anyone who is in search of the latter.

Toronto Edwardian Beginning his career as an independent architect in the mid-1870s, Frank Darling came to prominence as the principal of Darling & Pearson Architects, designing a plethora of delightful bank buildings ...
