YouTube video by Takesβ’ by Jamelle Bouie

Starting wars and spying at home
Authoritarian tactics give away the game. And they can backfire.
I wrote about OpenAI and Trump's despicable war on Iran. Spying at home and starting wars overseas are classic authoritarian tactics, but despite the dΓ©jΓ vu, we are no longer living in 2003.

βRemember that one can be against a hateful regime, as is the case with the Iranian regime, as is the whole of Spanish society, and at the same time be against an unjustified, dangerous military intervention outside of international law.β

I remember reading the Call in 1967 β I was 15 and my oldest brother was a Naval Academy grad serving on a destroyer escort off the coast of North Vietnam at the time. It was an intense time of learning and debate at the family dinner table, of high school antiwar strikes and so much more. 9/x

5 of the signers were arrested in early 1968. These were Michael Ferber, Dr. Benjamin Spock, William Sloan Coffin, Mitchell Goodman, and Marcus Raskin. They were convicted of conspiring, among other charges, to 'counsel, aid, and abet' young men to refuse service in the armed forces.β 8/x

The Call argued that the American war in Vietnam was clearly unconstitutional, had not been authorized by Congress as required by the Constitution, and violated major international treaties to which the US was a signatory. 3/x

We should be furious to live in a country that does thisβto be at the mercy of a flailing empire that always chooses death and conquest over peace and justice. We should be furious at a political system that makes it so much easier to kill people than to help them. We should be furious at an establishment that lusts so ardently for war, and that has so much contempt for humanity. We should be furious at the untrammeled power of a global ruling class that causes so much suffering. And we should recommit to the most important task ahead: destroying as much of that power as we can.
