We can agree that both are burdens inflicted on us by nerds.

A world away, Southeast Asia reacts The Philippines mourns the first known loss

We know of at least one death so far in the Middle East crisis, with Filipina carer Mary Anne Velazquez de Vera killed in Israel. Given how many people work in the region I'm very concerned we'll see that increase as this drags on. For now, 🇮🇩🇲🇾🇵🇭 responses darimulut.substack.com/p/a-world-aw...

The Nepalese royal family is one of the most interesting events of recent decades. Semi-related: the new Casio keyboard anthem rules.

Thanks! I hadn’t considered it in those domains but I think you’re right - it’s the practical measures to preserve autonomy (and humanity) that matter.

Teachers are hiding invisible prompts in assessments to catch students using AI. I'm trying something different - acting like a teacher, not a cop.

No idea if it'll work but worth sharing though - I find so much of teaching is tweaking, tinkering and experimenting at quite a tactical level.

Yep I would def be interested in that - I'll keep you posted!

I’ve done it in a relative rush so haven’t set up any robust evaluation - but if it’s useful and relevant I’ll refine it and try to capture students’ perceptions more meaningfully.

I'll keep you posted. The impact probably won't be immediately obvious, given the quality of slop has gotten a lot better over the last year. Hearing from the students who actually tried it would be most meaningful - I need to give some thought to how I evaluate it properly next time.

Yeah, though I've find the most reliable way to explain it is talking them through this verbally when I explain the assessment. The document alone hopefully makes sense but the appendix might confuse as introduce a new, secondary audience (the AIs), which is why I buried it.

Come out the Epstein files looking *better*, only to self-immolate. What a time to be alive.

War is never the answer. It seems it needs to be said. Again. Our hearts are bleeding and we are alarmed about developments

Housing, Aukus, welcoming bombings, The Voice to Parliament, inflation, education policy, the list goes on.

Might be easier to ask ways he has met, let alone exceeded, expectations.

The Film Students Who Can No Longer Sit Through Films The attention-span crisis goes to the movies.

Interesting points - I’d be interested in your expanding on it. Do you mean that I’m assuming AI should be part of care?

New preprint: We got 400 postgrad students to use AI in an assessment and critically reflect on it, rather than banning it. Here’s what happened.

Might be useful as you head into the new teaching year, especially the design principles.

Preprint, so feedback welcome. Written with Anthony Sunjaya, Rachael Ong, Kirsty Nash, and Katrina Blazek.

How far back in time can you understand English? An experiment in language change

How far back in time can you understand English? A story where each paragraph travels back in time.

Unless you’ve studied middle English I doubt you (like me) will make it back further than 1200.
