..full knowledge that there are gonna be sloppy ridiculous episodes, episodes that absolutely read as racist now, etc. but they'll also be interspersed with some of the best sci fi in the world! It's an intensely human show and the imperfection is part of that for me.
I loooove DS9 but familiarity..
With TNG, DS9, or Voyager, you're gonna end up with a mix of incredible episodes and ridiculous episodes, especially in the first season or two of each series. And I think some try to steer away from the flaws.
But imo Trek is best experienced taking in the good with the bad. Start with TNG, with
Unsurprisingly gets back to capitalism really not WANTING us to think about the human component of art, these things exist as fully formed products and should only be regarded as such, etc
Of how humans engage with creating things. And THAT part is what a lot are missing.
I think that can be ascribed to the fact that what we call "media literacy" is really a constellation of different skills that interact with each other. You may not have as much context into the history, technique, etc behind visual art, but you have carryover skills regarding the emotional aspects
If they DON'T understand that, I'm not sure that's something you can change within the scope of a single discussion on a specific piece!
I think it depends on their baseline media literacy and emotional development! Like, if they already understand that their emotional response to a particular piece of art is not the end-all be-all, then they'll probably at a bare minimum be interested in yours.
