Only watched the first 2 so far (son only wants to watch 1 a day), but my biggest issue so far is both the first 2 episodes had apex predators chasing after comparably tiny animals.

There's a reason that big predators specialize in big prey, unless they do the whole colonial insectivore thing!

As someone New England raised (though I've lived in Pittsburgh for 20 years now), the openness of the rest of the country never ceases to amaze me.

My default if someone talks to me is to presume they're insane, asking for money, or an evangelical. Why else would someone talk to a stranger?

A critique partner of mine told me that Shad refused to use anything other than a line editor (and it was one of his fans, not a professional).

I guess developmental editing is woke.

As a professional military strategist, I just wanted to make sure everyone has a full understanding of the American strategy in Iran, thank you for your attention to this matter

The result of all of this is that normies are being rapidly radicalized, and the institutions that side with Trump or ignore his actions are getting delegitimized, rather than providing legitimacy to the regime.

For all that people talk about Trump as a Hitler in the wings, there's something of Nicholas II about him. Not that I think (unfortunately) we're on the cusp of a socialist revolution. Yet he's solely focused on elite-level buy in, whilst doing everything he can to piss off pretty much everyone.

Bouie is an establishment liberal, so I'm not defending his overall take. Nonetheless, the Trump Administration has repeatedly been "working the refs" over the last year - soft peddling, sane-washing, and just outright ignoring. Despite this, his popularity plunges, and resistance grows.

I dunno. I guess there's a "who is this for" when considering under-represented PC identities in gaming. Like, do we presume people will be playing their identities, and thus want them to escape the sexism/homophobia of RL? Or want a lesson in empathy for those without this knowledge?

Of course, since it was written mainly by pervy guys, you could also use sex as a RP tool, either for seduction or just trading sex for access to money/quest items.

But like, isn't it more honest than in modern games, where your gender is just a cosmetic concern?

Okay, finished your video.

While it didn't have romance per se, I'm thinking back to how different Fallout 2's experience was if you played a female character. You could have casual encounters with both genders regardless, but as a woman you also had to deal with unwanted advances from many chars.

Gonna watch soon, but related to the whole playersexual debate - is it weird I want more depictions of bad relationships in games?

The PC isn't my power fantasy - it's a character in a story. And just like characters in other media, sometimes stories are better when things fall apart.

Figure skating too, but only when twinks do it.

This could literally be anywhere in Appalachia, so I think you're fine.

Yeah, Jefferson understood he was a spendthrift, and would be hopelessly impoverished if he hadn't been a "planter."

In general, I think people overestimate 18th century racism. Ideological white supremacy was further in the future. They were more honest about just doing it because they could.

I mean, I get it - it was meant as a unifying mythology for Europe, to help supplant the different national mythologies. But it's very clearly just a stitch-up of a bunch of things that few people with ancestors north of the Alps can really claim heritage to.

Classic cultural appropriation.

I've always found the mythos of "the West" to be pretty strange, because it rests upon both the adoption of a Near Eastern religion, and the embracing of the legacy of Greece and Rome by many nations which - by and large - either weren't in the Empire, or were very lightly touched by it.

Your point about Bukowski at the end makes me wonder why there isn't discourse into why men are so into edgelord shit in literature.

After all, the nihilist instinct is arguably way more damaging to society than some joyful lewdness.

No, but someone like Trump would never have been able to be picked as Speaker of the House. So when the GOP had control we'd just get insider-y chuds.

The whole Vance "America is not an idea" thing is a pretty explicit repudiation of American exceptionalism. The only thing they find exceptional about America is they happen to be born there. Otherwise, it's the same blood/soil nationalism that has plagued the world for centuries. (3/3)

It proves that America is just as susceptible to "presidential republic disease" as the countries which styled themselves after our system. Probably not feasible, but to maintain true democracy longer term, we need to get as close to a parliamentary system as possible. (2/3)

Thought for the day: Does Trumpism mark the end of American exceptionalism?

Seems like it does to me for two reasons: (1/3)

I have noticed the marketing of AI is pretty much "every man a boss." Probably why it's more popular in c-suites than among regular workers, since most of us prefer working over managing others. Though it's clear some people get a kick out of an obsequious servant.

If you have to use a dialog tag, use said (or maybe asked). But it's better to use as few tags as needed.

I try and use action beats mixed into dialogue whenever possible. And if you have two characters talking for awhile, no tags are needed past the first back and forth.

To a first approximation, AI is revealing who out there really, really wants to be the worst kind of boss; doing no real while exploiting others for $$$.

That's the dream it sells. Every man a boss.

A lot of morality is defined by your peer group, not an internalized sense of right and wrong. It's one reason why infidelity becomes so much more common if all your friends are cheaters already, for example. Monkey see, monkey do. This is just a very, very extreme (and disgusting) example.

My first exposure to this was in science fiction. Isaac Asimov had his three laws of Robotics, and later retconned a "zeroth law" to come before the first.

Chapters can vary in length, even within a given work. The important thing is just picking the right moment to close one, which I think you have a good sense of given your previous work.

Just pick a dramatic point to end things, and make sure you're not always ending chapters the same way.
