"We have to start treating food access as core community infrastructure." In her State of the City address, Wilson reiterated her campaign-trail proposal to open a publicly funded grocery store, which she announced with UFCW 300. www.thestranger.com/news/2025/08...
Wilson did not commit to a decision about the expansion of the CCTV system. She said she's still concerned about digital security, but she's also been "moved" by families who see it as a vital tool to solve gun violence crimes, especially after two students were shot at a bus stop in Rainier Beach.
"We can't get so used to the way things are that we start to feel it's natural for so many people to be left to sleep outside every night," Wilson says. She committed to 1,000 new units of shelter this year, with services matched to people's needs.
Mayor Katie Wilson as she starts her State of the City Address: "I don't think I've ever talked for as long as I'm about to talk, so we'll see how it goes."

Seattle’s police chief built his reputation on transparency. But a report released last fall in Madison found Shon Barnes ignored directives and key data in a body-cam pilot. Now Seattle is expanding police surveillance and trusting the same guardrails.
