this is so interesting because I'm looking at interactional data where it's almost entirely white students quoting rap lyrics in conversation, at an elite private university

ok...why have I now come across both a "Smiler" and a "Smiley" in the literature on lyrical content analysis in popular music

I do feel like there's a lot of racism underlying a lot of the research on the contents of rap lyrics. I might have tried to ignore that feeling at first but...I think it's legit

this is how they math: "Because adolescents 15-18 years are exposed to an average of 2.4 hrs of popular music per day, our results suggest that the average adolescent is exposed to approximately 84 references to explicit substance use per day, 591 references per week, or 30 732 references per yr."

I’m going to make a prediction right now that a certain university will announce early in spring break which programs are getting closed after having been β€œpaused”, in an attempt to prevent people from responding in an organized way

I think it's really fun/ny that I'm program planner for the Language and Social Interaction division of the National Communication Association during the year when the theme is "Move/ments in Communication" I just don't think that's how slashes work

My ring broke and I have to get it repaired 😒 in the meantime I was thinking of wearing this one on my other hand which I think my grandmother also gave meβ€”what do you think of this one compared to the other? be honest I’m just curious. I feel like the other one is nicer?

Unfortunately those same kind of complaints are being used to dismantle tenure

I have all these jersey shore type second cousins, and of course my favorite one is my dad’s favorite cousin’s daughter who is also the only one who was nice to me at the one extended family birthday party we had for her grandfather like 15 years ago

I don't know if this is helpful for any early career faculty, but here is a thing I learned: the things you did NOT do or said no to will typically not appear in your annual review.

Don’t mind me just cold calling language & culture reporters. I’m trying to get back in the media/news circuit after a bit of a lapseβ€”if anyone can help with that and make any introductions do get in touch!

According to PEW, teens in households making under $75K are more likely to use chatbots for help with all or most schoolwork. I read a comment on another platform that said this is amazing news because we are "finally going to close the achievement gap." That is not how I would interpret this data.

Signed language linguists, what sign do you use for argument when you’re talking about argument structure? There isn’t a specific sign in Norwegian SL, so would love your thoughts πŸ™

big shout out to @natshri.bsky.social for all the work she has already(!) done as moderator in helping me organize this panel (and being there since the early versions of this panel which was previously rejected 2x from larger conferences that shall not be named) also to Leah Wingard our respondent!

Heading to San Diego for the Western States Communication Association, where I will be chairing the panel "Resisting stereotypes through language use". This will be in the Language, Self, and Social Construction division, and will feature a wonderful group of international scholars!
