this is so interesting because I'm looking at interactional data where it's almost entirely white students quoting rap lyrics in conversation, at an elite private university
sci-hub.ru/10.1111/soc4...
ok...why have I now come across both a "Smiler" and a "Smiley" in the literature on lyrical content analysis in popular music
I do feel like there's a lot of racism underlying a lot of the research on the contents of rap lyrics. I might have tried to ignore that feeling at first but...I think it's legit
this is how they math: "Because adolescents 15-18 years are exposed to an average of 2.4 hrs of popular music per day, our results suggest that the average adolescent is exposed to approximately 84 references to explicit substance use per day, 591 references per week, or 30 732 references per yr."
sorry but this is just really funny, in JAMA Pediatrics jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Ok here they look really green. this is driving me insane

love it when I need a citation for something and the perfect thing pops up written by a linguistics professor currently at my alma mater π
Iβm going to make a prediction right now that a certain university will announce early in spring break which programs are getting closed after having been βpausedβ, in an attempt to prevent people from responding in an organized way
π’ Interested in applying for our MA program for the fall?Or perhaps one of our certificate programs? The deadline is coming up! MA program deadlines for application is April 1 (No Joke!) This weekend would be a good time to start an application π.Questionsβββ Let us know! www.umb.edu/academic...

I think it's really fun/ny that I'm program planner for the Language and Social Interaction division of the National Communication Association during the year when the theme is "Move/ments in Communication" I just don't think that's how slashes work
My ring broke and I have to get it repaired π’ in the meantime I was thinking of wearing this one on my other hand which I think my grandmother also gave meβwhat do you think of this one compared to the other? be honest Iβm just curious. I feel like the other one is nicer?
Unfortunately those same kind of complaints are being used to dismantle tenure
I think thatβs just the CV
I have all these jersey shore type second cousins, and of course my favorite one is my dadβs favorite cousinβs daughter who is also the only one who was nice to me at the one extended family birthday party we had for her grandfather like 15 years ago
I don't know if this is helpful for any early career faculty, but here is a thing I learned: the things you did NOT do or said no to will typically not appear in your annual review.
Donβt mind me just cold calling language & culture reporters. Iβm trying to get back in the media/news circuit after a bit of a lapseβif anyone can help with that and make any introductions do get in touch!

According to PEW, teens in households making under $75K are more likely to use chatbots for help with all or most schoolwork. I read a comment on another platform that said this is amazing news because we are "finally going to close the achievement gap." That is not how I would interpret this data.
Signed language linguists, what sign do you use for argument when youβre talking about argument structure? There isnβt a specific sign in Norwegian SL, so would love your thoughts π
Spread the word! Our division is open to anyone who works on discourse analysis, conversation analysis, ethnography of communication, & related approaches! This is the conference Iβve been going to almost every yr for the past 9 yrs. Iβm currently the vice chair & program planner of this division!

Ready to attend WSCA 2026! Love a February conference in San Diego π
big shout out to @natshri.bsky.social for all the work she has already(!) done as moderator in helping me organize this panel (and being there since the early versions of this panel which was previously rejected 2x from larger conferences that shall not be named) also to Leah Wingard our respondent!
Heading to San Diego for the Western States Communication Association, where I will be chairing the panel "Resisting stereotypes through language use". This will be in the Language, Self, and Social Construction division, and will feature a wonderful group of international scholars!
