A picture of a Macintosh PowerPortable. With a layout a little like a modern laptop, its origins from the 1980s are undeniable. Trackball, full keyboard, greyscale display and handles all over the place it was the sleekest a luggable ever got, and the last Macintosh with a touch bar for 25 years.

1990's Macintosh PowerPortable was the bridge between the original Macintosh Portable, and the upcoming PowerBook 100. While the original Portable and PowerBook were essentially speed-bumped original Macintoshes, the PowerPortable held all the power of a Macintosh II in its stylish (if large) case.

Translation is comparatively very simple, as that can be done entirely within a client app. The major issue there is it requires developer time to actually implement, and unless someone external submits the code to do so (open source yay) the Bluesky team has other things to do first.

I know a little from looking into development of ATProto tools, as well as also kinda following this as just a regular user. The existing ATProto is basically exclusively public first, for better and worse. A private mode that lives up to the same standards would need to be entirely different.

With how Bluesky works, that's a much bigger ask than implementing bookmarks. Effectively on the scale of building a second protocol alongside the existing one.

Not saying it isn't happening, but it's a big job to get through.
