If you have just a resource, be it a wiki or other players to be there to answer questions when the player needs to know, like "what does skilling up your weapons actually do?" then like, it goes from the frustrating 'this design is hostile' to 'oh, that makes so much more sense, that's so smart.'

XI tends to be a pretty difficult game to get into if you aren't sure what the game wants out of you. It's hostile because it's just not possible to explain the systems, mechanics, and flow even with the tutorials the game gives you, because a game isn't able to know when the player is receptive.

So she made an account because we wanted to get her in before the Odin server cut off where she couldn't play with me, but I managed to get her to play up until she unlocked her subjob and she 'gets' the appeal of XI now.

Like, I am sure it's worth it. I am sure they are good quality. But if I ever spend more than $30 on a toy, I am gonna wear it like a packer just to make sure I am getting every penny worth out of it.

Unpopular opinion, but a lot of this "doing it right" mentality is how we wind up with games all feeling the exact same.

Difficulty spikes, weird controls, ropey onboarding all of it critical to prevent games feeling like they're ground down and pumped out safe mush.

there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for
