COLD is OKAY! This is your annual reminder that frigid cold temperatures help reduce invasive species that don't do well in winter. These sub-zero days help protect Minnesotans from warm-climate mosquitoes and ticks that are capable of transmitting disease.

Embrace the cold! πŸ₯ΆπŸ˜ƒ

TICKS ARE BACK! Fall is the time when adult deer ticks re-emerge and seek a bloodmeal before winter. As temperatures cool down, mosquitoes and other insects will be less abundant, but ticks remain active until we see consistent freezing.

Check yourself and your pets after those fall hikes!

Weekly Update – September 3rd – A Slight Increase to Begin the Month, but Not Likely to Last View the latest surveillance update about mosquitoes in the Twin Cities.

WEEKLY UPDATE: Mosquito numbers increased slightly last week, but are still close to the average for this time of year. There are a few outliers like a trap in Blaine that collected over 900 mosquitoes, but for the most part things are winding down.

The end (of mosquitoes) is nigh! Virtually all mosquitoes can't power their flight when temperatures are below 55 degrees. With overnight lows in the 40s this week that means mosquito numbers are going to continue to drop and the end of the season may be close!
