I really liked this discussion of prediction markets trying to position themselves as news, and the gaping holes in that argument.

"USian" seems to reflect a growing, understandable desire from non-U.S. people of the Americas to distance themselves from the USA.
After a presentation, my friend asked Ted Chiang to sign his book "Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk" which, with a heavy sigh, he did.
Really enjoyed this analysis/takedown of the Prediction Market premise that these companies make serious contributions to the news ecosystem. Distinguishing events vs. pseudo-events, a nod at Baudrillard's "hyperreality," and exploding "insider trading is good, actually" claims make this delightful.
Just as tax season is upon us...
"The Breaking" is an apocalypse, a cataclysmic change that cannot be understood from this side, and cannot be communicated from the other. Except some claim to see & hear what's happening, and it creates a rift with those who can't bring themselves to believe. Until the rift engulfs them. Familiar.
42 sales out of 464 submissions. So 91% rejections, close.
Marco Rubio will assume the role of Supreme Leader of Iran.
I do not like this reboot of Agents of SHIELD.
NOEM TAKING QUESTIONS - DOES NOT APPEAR TO KNOW SHE WAS FIRED
I'm not sure *I'm* not something that exists purely inside his mind, a mental construct he can torture with forced cognitive dissonance.
"Learning—most importantly, learning when not to do magic—a vital part of our training, and why it took so many years."
A very short but graceful story that posits a world where the path to power leads through acquiring the wisdom of living in the real world and spending the time to understand it.
I will add this to my nightly prayers.
Spoke too soon; she's being assigned to something called The Shield of the Americas.
Celebrating the departure, not the new arrival.
The rot is from the top, but it's good to know I won't have to see Kristi Noem anymore, in the news, in her horrible television ads, or anywhere else. A small, tempered celebration.
I think the influence is limited by what's needed to access, and the tactics of influence. You have to be predisposed to corruption and oligarchy to even get a conversation in most cases.
I'm on a George Saunders (firmly slotted as a "literary" writer) binge, and both the short stories and the novels are full of fantasy and science fiction elements!
But maybe it's HOW the speculative elements are used? The kind of story being told?

After listening to NYT's The Daily about how Netanyahu got Trump to go along with waging war against Iran, I'm beginning to understand why so many pay so much money for access to Trump. Given access, Trump is incredibly amenable to being influenced.
So if you have a dark fantasy story written, but only science fiction markets are open to submissions, just change the demon to an AI chatbot.
Screw the Undying Lands. I'm taking the ship sailing East.
No doubt her testimony here will follow the same pattern as her prior testimonies.
As always
Please nobody try to read deeper meaning into this stupid joke.
