Black lab mix standing in the river shallows, shoals in the background
This week was A LOT. But finally, a day that feels like spring!
Despite all the horrors at present <waves around>...my student just matched to her #1 internship pick. She's over the moon. I'm so happy for her. π₯Ή
Book cover: Handbook of spirituality, health & well-being, Ed. Jon Webb
Table of contents
Contributed a chapter to this fine volume, and my copy just arrived!
I'd watch a muppet show movie where the muppets infiltrate an academic conference.
We ended up with 10 inches here in the city. Some nearby areas had more, some less. Another snow day this Monday, as the temps are single-digit and nothing has melted thus far.
Snow in the trees
Woke to about 4 inches of snow. Slated to get 5-8 more today.
Thanks for the recommendation! Already added to my list at my local public library.
Seems apropos that after 5 hours of building a course website & reading list (because I decided to completely overhaul a course in the weeks leading up to the semester), the song that pops up next in my playlist is Queen's "Keep Yourself Alive."
In an online webinar where the moderators set audio to unmute when you start talking. (Who does that?!) So 100+ people got to hear me help my teenager find something before school.
Tiger tortoiseshell cat curled into a ball on a blue blanket.
So much social & political awfulness so early in the year. It keeps coming. To buffer, I focus on the home front. Cuddles with the cat. A library book to enjoy. Helping the eldest finish his college applications. My book (my 4th!!) is in press. Lovely wolf moon in the night sky. Take care, all.
Huh. I mean, sure. But I feel like I was hopeful for last year, and look where that got me.
This year, I'm hopeful to not know what so many ERs, surgical recovery rooms, and hospitals look like. I'm hopeful for less cruelty and hate in the world. And I'm hopeful for relentless compassion.
And a few more (sorry, you asked): Dreadful by Caitlin Rozakis, Welcome to Glorious Tuga by Francesca Segal, Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, MacBeth: A Novel by AJ Hartley & David Hewson, Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, Alice series by Christina Henry (dark but good if you like Alice in Wonderland)
Ooh...I have some: The House in the Cerulean Sea & Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune, Hell's library trilogy by AJ Hackwith, Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky, Hide by Kiersten White (horror, not crime), The Hike by Drew Magary, Masters of Death by Olivie Blake, A Master of Djinn by P Djeli Clark
Had a manuscript rejected, w/a reviewer repeatedly stating that we are "incompetent" & suggesting we don't read literature or do stats properly. 3 of my students are co-authors, & it was their 1st paper. Can we not be intentionally cruel in reviews? Jeez. No wonder students see academia as toxic.
Me, resting after surgery. My cat is also resting, though that is her normal state.
Resting and working on manuscript revisions & editorial decisions two weeks post-surgery. Not being able to walk for this time has been humbling & frustrating. Good thing my feline nurse is so attentive & cuddly. Nurse Dinah believes in bedrest solidarity.
Views of a mountain ridge, pond, and stream along the trail
Book deadline was yesterday, with 5 chapters left to go. <sigh> Well, onwards. Today, hiked 3+ miles in & out to this lovely spot where I wrote 8 pages of Chapter 10. Progress!
In a study of professors, women got 378 new work requests over 4 weeks vs 118 for men. Women spent more time on service, advising & teaching; men on research. Orgs should track who is taking extra duties & ensure they are rewarded and distributed fairly. www.forbes.com/sites/kimels...
Black lab mix approaching small stream in the woods
Finally - the rain stopped! Time for a peaceful walk in the woods with the pup before settling back into ALL THE WORK for today (i.e., 3 dissertations, the next book chapter, a couple of manuscripts, & writing by-laws for the Dept & College). That said, I think I'd rather go back to the woods.
Photographs (counter-clockwise from top left): two ducks on the river bank; two ducks moving from riverbank into the river; yellow flowers in a pollinator garden; a black, orange, and white butterfly perched on a flower with pink buds; water rushing over the river shoals
A couple of ducks joined me this morning as I worked on the book and a manuscript. π¦

Hand holding a blackberry vine with two green blackberries on it
Off contract for the summer, so while I'll still be writing & editing, will also be very much gardening. Here, the blackberry bush has two tiny berries on it! Blueberry bushes....did not survive winter. Soon, will plant allllll the vegetables.

Finished writing another book chapter today from this lovely spot. Waters were a bit high, but weather was lovely. Bonus: met a lot of dogs.
A lovely reminder that it's time to get out and enjoy spring.

Changed today's schedule a bit to allow for extra writing time for the book. Am fortunate to live where I could write in this peaceful spot for a couple of hours.

Sweet, sleepy Dinah....
Amongst all the terrible news of late, I remind myself to pause and enjoy the beauty around me.

Cool, cool. Because I was afraid we didn't have enough apocalyptic disaster potential going on in the US right now.
