AOC also said many smart and interesting things about topics such as progressive foreign policy, trade agreements, how to counter right-wing populism and how much Pam Bondi sucks. In conclusion, having seen her in person, I now believe she will be president someday.
It was also really striking that the other event participants (e.g. Franziska Giffey, who introduced her) kept trying to emphasize a women-in-politics angle to AOC's story and AOC seemed very uninterested in this framing and kept saying that her primary lens was class and economic injustice.
Another interesting thing was that several young (early 20s) audience members said they were running for Berlin city council and she was their inspiration. I hadn't known she had that kind of presence among young Germans.
My kids and I attended this AOC event last night in Berlin. She is very charismatic in person! We were sitting next to some paramedics who were there at the venue's behest just in case of an emergency, not out of any interest in AOC, and they loved this bit about not letting ICE agents use bathrooms
I'm delighted that this odd story about a priest foraging for mushrooms has found a wonderful home on @freeflashfiction.bsky.social! Massive thanks to EIC Ian Rushton for believing in this piece!
Congratulations, Daniel! This story came out great and Father Terry is hilarious.
Ooh the vanishings and slow-burn eeriness in this story are so good
This was my (late 70s) experience too -- kids a few years older than me were scary/mean as hell, kids a few years younger were totally chill, my own cohort was a mix. The way kids were raised changed RADICALLY from about 1975 to 1990, I think it's really underrated as a social shift of that era.
Very true! Also, Cyndi Lauper has a lot of soul.
"I am a children's entertainer who specializes in face painting," writes a woman now in hiding from the federal government for witnessing a state-sanctioned street execution
In some countries the outbreak of bloodshed inspires the opposition party to call for the leader to resign
More accurately: I have told the clergy of the episcopal diocese of New Hampshire that we may be entering into that same witness and I've asked them to get their affairs in order, to make sure they have their wills written..."
unsettling in a good way!
I rewatched it this week too and same! Also felt on the second watch I appreciated more what a great character Delta Slim is. It's just an incredible movie overall.
On this shortest day and longest night, I'm so happy to be part of @necessaryfiction.com's wonderful solstice project, which will be featuring new short pieces of wintry writing from now until new year's:
Love the lingering eeriness of this unsettling Arctic tale by @kplumhoff.bsky.social in Issue 90 of @smokelong.bsky.social:
When telling Americans about the year of (legally mandated, in no way contingent on any supervisor's whim) parental leave I received in Germany, one of the most common responses I got was along the lines of "wow, that was so awesome of your boss to give you that! What an inspiring, amazing boss!"
Weβre all being punished because a bunch of unattractive billionaires are mad they can only buy the faux respect of sycophants, and not real cultural influence.
Hey, I do hate my student loan company with the fire of a thousand suns and coincidentally enough have asked for this very novel for Christmas and am greatly looking forward to reading it!
Congratulations! π₯³
Even though there was a moral panic about jazz in the 1920s that was VERY MUCH like the 80s/09s moral panics about rap and heavy metal! I mean, the whole reason US kids had to learn square dancing in school gym class for decades was as counter programming to the "harmful" influence of jazz.
Thank you!
Some really excellent writing and reporting here on the monstrous absurdity of ICE in New Orleans.
Honored & delighted that my story is on the shortlist for the Elsewhere Prize of the wonderful @fracturedlit.bsky.social
Looking for a pièce de résistance for a birthday party or Christmas day? The February 1911 edition of American Homes and Gardens has you covered with Quaint Dessert Dishes like Welshwoman with Cat, banana pigs, and of course the booby bird:
This reminds me of a study I read about that found what people who hid Jews from the Nazis in WWII had in common, across diff't countries, was that most were people whose neighbors found them disagreeable & mildly unpleasant. Moral courage seems to negatively correlate with likeability.
Congratulations!!!
me, after that: whew, really learned my lesson this time, will definitely remember a book next time
me, next time: wait where is my book
I love Lublin!
