Cyclists, including a child, ride in a designated bike lane with a green surface on a city street. Several police motorcycles escort the group. Residential and commercial buildings line the street, and signs indicate traffic directions.

graphic showing normal signal cycle, where a streetcar/tram gets stuck at a red light, versus one with phase rotation, where a streetcar/tram is detected, and given a green automatically.
With phase rotation, however, the left turn phase can either come before (leading) or after (lagging) depending on estimated streetcar arrivals.
This *significantly* reduces delays for transit riders!

Curbs in the snow cleared separated bike lane
@streets.boston.gov please remove the pre cast curbs from the mass ave bike lane across from clear way street. This is a major safety hazard for all road users and someone will be hurt.

I honestly find itβs the older cars that have the problem more. I think folks without LEDs feel like their lights arenβt bright enough so they put on high beams to compensate.

I hate being in Ubers because in my experience they always turn on red illegally or break other laws. Please just obey the law? I just want to get to my destination safelyβ¦

US Traffic Safety Is Getting Worse, While Other Countries Improve
The rising rate of road deaths in the US continues to defy global trends. Hereβs what traffic planners in other nations could teach their American counterparts.
Actual causes of the US road safety crisis:
πΉ Car bloat
πΉ Failure to enforce traffic laws
πΉ Fast urban roads
πΉ Suburbanization of poverty/jobs
Blaming smartphones is lazy thinking.

Arlington is really working to reduce speeding on Lake street.
β
Speed limit is now 25 instead of 30
β
25 MPH reminder signs installed
β
Signal at Minuteman now has pedestrian recall for the trail so the signal gives vehicles red more often (and provides less delay for trail users)

Iβm mixed on those. I see the benefit I suppose but at that point you should just provide a protected pedestrian crossing

RRFB activated with a light flashing on a crosswalk. Photo taken in the dark, but thanks to the illumination from the device the crosswalk is lit.
Loving Arlingtonβs newest RRFB crosswalks that come with this white light that illuminates the crosswalk and pedestrian when the button is pressed. Makes the crossing so much more visible!

Totally agree. Something Iβve prioritized in designing signals is adding that in when we canβt make protected crossings. Expect more this year (:

Maybe a study at a signal first with base line turn on red. Then a red arrow. Then just a no turn on red sign. Then a red arrow and sign. Iβm guessing in that order compliance will increase, but maybe not? And maybe by varying values. Something Iβll be thinking about more in 2026!

Iβm curious about this and maybe will look into this for future projects. Red arrows communicating no turn on red may have some advantages and could be useful at signals where no turn on red compliance is especially poor. Would love to study this further.

Traffic signal approach to tee with βNO TURN ON REDβ marked.
Traffic signal with right turn signal red arrow but no no turn on red
Witnessing a funny phenomenon on Hammond Pond Parkway today.
I saw more or the same level of drivers wait at this red arrow without a No Turn on Red sign as I did see wait for the no turn on red sign.
Thereβs something psychological about a red arrow that is stronger than a sign.
