What a way to start a #postdoc! I spent Aug-Sep as part of the #BeyondEPICA campaign @bas.ac.uk, handling unique a #icecore that likely holds >1.2 million yrs of climate history. π² This European collaboration is breaking many records, with an incredible amount of data waiting to tell its story... β¨

Graphic overview plot of environmental records preserved in the Cordillera Darwin firn core, e.g. including various soluble ions, insoluble particles, diatoms, and stable water isotopes. Source: Figure 3 of the paper by Tetzner et al. (2025, JGR:Atmospheres).
π‘Our results show this high-mountain site preserves valuable environmental records and opens new possibilities for understanding Southern Hemisphere #climate from the heart of the westerly wind belt. But time is running out - rapid #warming puts these unique records at ever-increasing #risk. π° 2/2

The First Firn Core From the Cordillera Darwin Icefield: Implications for Future Ice Core Research
Surface air temperature estimations suggest the Cordillera Darwin Icefield (CDI) has been progressively exposed to surface melt conditions
Firn core layers present minor post-depositional disrupt...
π Proud to be part of this pioneering research, which has just been published in @agu.org JGR Atmospheres! The team, led by Dieter Tetzner at @bas.ac.uk, ventured to one of the world's most remote ice fields to extract the first #firn core from Chile's Cordillera Darwin. βοΈ 1/2

Um no. Whatβs really expensive is doing nothing.

Treading gently: The scientists who leave little trace at the world's northernmost lab
Scientists in the high Arctic are lifting their labs into the air to avoid damage from melting permafrost.
"In daily life I meet people who ask me if the Arctic is actually changing," says Iain Rudkin, Arctic Operations Manager for the British Antarctic Survey.
"I wish they could see how much it's lost so quickly."

Rain in the northernmost city on Earth. This month temperatures have been almost always above normal.
The Arctic is becoming totally unrecognisable.
And in the meantime #BP and #Equinor are doubling down on fossil fuels.
Profits over people. Profits over a liveable Earth.

Warmly lit counter of Pages Coffee House in Cambridge, UK, with various cakes and croissants on display, two tote bags hanging on the front, and the barista preparing coffee behind it.
A delicately prepared decaf Latte in a white mug placed on a wooden table, with a sugary cinnamon swirl next to it.
Sometimes, the world feels crazy and overwhelming. Thatβs when finding grounding spaces matters most. Grabbing a delicious coffee at Pages Coffee House today β a small reminder that calm, kindness, and quiet goodness still exist if we pause and notice.

Climate scientists, itβs your turn.
If you rely on data from NOAA, time to start backing it up. Probably not a bad idea for people to do this with NASA, USGS, EPA, etc.
Our group is doing our best but thereβs a lot of data out there to save from King Control-X here.
