HUGE thanks to my (150+!) collaborators and supervisor (@profandyfield.com) for the words of wisdom and support along the way.
The implications arenβt trivial. Treating them separately risks duplicating measures and fragmenting theory, resulting in parallel literatures around what may be the same underlying fear and stifling research progress.
Again, strong overlap:
β’ scales were very strongly related
β’ items clustered more by type of experience (e.g., tests, help-seeking) than by domain (maths vs stats)
β’ associations with other variables were statistically equivalent
β’ incremental variance was negligible
Study 2:
We re-tested it internationally: 6,885 students, 83 universities, 33 countries.
We examined it in even more ways:
β’ correlations
β’ EFA & CFA structure
β’ associations with 11 related variables
β’ incremental validity
Result? Substantial overlap:
β’ scales were very strongly related
β’ items clustered more by type of experience (e.g., tests, help-seeking) than by domain (maths vs stats)
β’ high stats anxiety/low maths anxiety (& vice-versa) was extremely rate
β’ state anxiety was similar for stats and maths tests
Study 1:
In two UK samples, we compared the STARS, R-MARS, and their parallel forms using correlations, factor analyses, latent profile analysis, and an experiment manipulating stats vs maths tests.
Two preprints from my PhD are now up!
Both ask: is the Statistics Anxiety Rating Scale (STARS) is measuring something distinct from the Revised Mathematics Anxiety Scale (R-MARS), or is this a jangle fallacy?

This webinar brings together authors of diverse statistics education studies to share how their research unfolded over time, including unanticipated obstacles, conflicting reviewer feedback, and evolving perspectives. Expect honesty, practical wisdom, and a deeper appreciation for the start-to-finish journey of βdoing researchβ in statistics education. Register: https://forms.gle/gA1HLEDqgbuw6mqS6
