Epistemic injustice and loneliness in late-stage dementia
Epistemic injustice and loneliness in late-stage dementia We have known for some time that loneliness can be both a trigger for and a consequence of mental health issues, but the COVID-19 pandemic and the necessity of lockdowns have brought home the centrality of social connections for our wellbeing. Dr Lucienne Spencer (University of Birmingham) discusses

Well worth a read! This stuck with me:

'Dialogueβ€”whether with a colleague or mentor, or, yes, even an AIβ€”can be a corrective to that kind of tunnel vision'

Absolutely this - and for students without mentors/colleagues available to work through ideas, AI could be a genuine leveller

Interesting post! Particularly like the distinction between calculators (converging on The Answer) vs LLMs (regressing to predictable averages)...

Great article - this is a really robust outline for people who might otherwise dismiss or diminish the harms as 'not real'. Thanks for sharing!

How AI-generated sexual images cause real harm, even though we know they are β€˜fake’ Publicly bombarding women with these images exerts control over how they present themselves online.

I wrote an article for @theconversation.com on how philosophy can help us understand the deep harms of AI-generated sexual images, e.g by Grok on X, as well as other digital misogyny like assault in virtual reality. #philsky #philtech

Is it a free gingerbread man, or is it systemic ableism? I have 5 children & have taken them all for the occasional Pret hot chocolate. My wheelchair-using 6 year old has been given a free gingerbread man on at least 50% of his visits… the others are yet to be gifted any baked goods. πŸ€”

This whole PhD endeavour was made worthwhile this week when my 6 year old was asked by a consultant what his parents did - and he replied 'my mum is a philosopher... my dad...umm I don't know, he works in his room' πŸ‘Œ

I also find it deeply troubling (see also, depressing, horrifying, etc) but am additionally curious about whether this constitutes a lie in the way we would typically use the term, and also curious about how we have this type of affective response to an LLM.
