The differences in time and velocity are much less important than that in movement. For example, I calculated that for a 10 mph headwind, 85 mph slider slows down to 75.1 instead of 77.2 without wind (or 473ms vs 466 in flight time) but the break can be 2-4 inch more depending on spin rate and tilt.

Looking forward to seeing this. My lecture on vibrating bats is approaching. I am debating about giving an homework on torpedo using my code this year but am afraid it might be too advanced stuff for some.

I do not have the book with me right now so I go from memory, but I think there are a few chapters in the book ''sports physics''. If you don't ahve the book, if you search for Rod Cross, you will find many many interesting papers on the bouncing and rolling of balls in various sports.

Nice. After a few oscillations it should reach a steady-state temperature. I havenβt done the full calculation, but if the rise is a few degrees your FLIR One might be able to detect it. I have the iPhone version of the camera, but I canβt use it anymore now that Iβm on Android.

Yes, this is what my simulation shows. Can all be explained using Eulerβs equations + a few reasonable assumptions that however need experimental validation, but nothing unusual in terms of physics. Iβll write more about this once I finish my SSW piece, which Iβve been procrastinating on for ages...

If his starting lead had been about the same as the distance of Muncy to the bag (more than that is a risk of double play in case of line drive), it would not even have been close at home plate...

Nice. Also, if you throw something up at 50km/s, then you also, from conservation of momentum, throw yourself in the opposite direction. I bet the energy associated with this would make quite a crater lol

Doing the ratio removes the need to know the spring constant since it cancels out.

In Waves and Vibrations book by French, the spring's mass modifies the frequency: Ο = β(k/(m + M/3)) instead of β(k/m). I measure this live in class with 0.5 vs 1.5β―kg masses. Classical ratio predicts β3, but thatβs not what we get. When I ask why, everyone blames air resistanceβ¦ lol.

In my experience, you cannot trust AI for even slightly complex calculations. You must be able to double check every steps, there are always errors. You still save a lot of time if you can do that, but if you follow blindly, you are looking for trouble...

Another variable that nobody talks about is the orientation of the seams. Average Cd for two seam vs four seam are not the same. With all else being equal, depending on where your spin axis is pinned, you will get a different distance...

Alternatively, if someone wants to make a heavier bat but keep the same MOI, how much greater can q be with a torpedo profile? Thatβs where things get really interesting.

But the real question is: if I give you a piece of wood and ask you to cut it into a bat of mass M, which shape gives the better q at the sweet spot? (We already know the MOI will be lower.)

Very interesting. However, we're comparing apples to oranges here β a normal bat vs. another with different mass and density that happens (probably by design, as you mentioned) to have the same MOI.
