Why-what-how is the formula I keep coming back to in my #scicomm work. Today it helped me to structure a communication training program: from strategy to content to wrapping.
By the way, this podcast made me discover some great books, movies and writers (such as Borges and The Third Man). And it helped me appreciate and understand them better. Defensively one of me favorite shows!

“My neck in the guillotine,” described one of the successful ERC CoG candidates we worked with this year the interview. This type of communication is quite intense: much at stake, highly competitive, online, brief. It makes thorough preparation key.

Adapting a presentation to an audience with some distance to your field not only fosters connection, it also makes you reflect on the bigger picture yourself. It is what the participants of my morning session experienced. A presentation is both a communication means and a thinking tool.

🌉 Bridge: end with a short summary and bridge to the next package. At the end of WP1, we’ll have a database, with that…
🛠️ How: this is the technical bit. Mention what is challenging, existing, novel, unique. Those aspects sell better than the details.
💡 What: …then do this. State what you will do as a solution to the problem you just raised. Why and what can be one sentence.
❓Why: most researchers just say what they want to do, but forget to mention why that makes sense. Placeholder: if you want… (insert a problem that resonates with the panel).
Say you have 5 minutes to present your #ERC proposal. How do you explain 5 years of research? My advice: don’t. Instead use my why-what-how-bridge template to say just enough. Here’s the executive summary. #scicomm
