Courage Belongs at City Hall—Not in the School Crosswalk [2 minute read] city Priorities: No funding for school streets Every weekday morning at Ottawa schools, the same scene plays out: cars lined bumper‑to‑bumper around schools, drivers jockeying for p…

✅ School Streets are one tool to cut the school-zone chaos, making walking and cycling feel safe.

And yet.

❌ No funding or pathway for parent councils, schools, or communities.

Courage needs to come from city leadership - not kids crossing the street.

We've allowed the spaces our children visit everyday to be taken away from them and devoted to motor vehicle chaos.

There is a better way and it starts with support and belief in school streets.

Gas price hikes & shortages “fuel” controversy, especially when they’re “driven” by an illegal war. But let’s not forget one of the most important discussions that should flow from such hikes — how they spotlight the difference between places with mobility choices, and places that are car-dependent.

For a personal finance story, I'm looking to speak with Canadians about transportation costs + housing. Did you buy a more affordable house farther out, then find vehicle costs + travel time added up? Or are you considering transportation in a house hunt? DM or email cailynn.klingbeil@gmail.com Thx!

Public Works and Infrastructure Committee – February 26, 2026 YouTube video by Ottawa City Council

We spoke at PIWC to support Cllr Troster’s inquiry and advocacy on No Right Turns on Red in the urban core.

A flawed city staff report on RTOR shows that we have a lot of work to do in making the city safe to cycle, walk and roll.

We spoke today at PWIC on the topic of a ban on right turns on red.

This is a common sense solution that has been tried all over the world and proven to increase safety. We do not need to reinvent the wheel at every intersection.

DUI was once a minor infraction. It took the efforts of MADD to make it both legally and socially unacceptable.

Today, distracted driving has become common - and increasingly tolerated - even though its consequences for human life are just as severe. It’s time we treat it with the same seriousness.

We should be very concerned about public health moving from a ideology of "protecting" to one of "moving fast."

These are neoliberal buzzwords that normalize wellness profiteering ("removing red tape") and distract from the harms of cutting public health protections/regulations.

@en.ottawa.ca wants to have it both ways: no traffic calming because drivers are such law-abiding citizens, but we can't ban right-turn-on-red because drivers, like toddlers, can't handle the frustration.

I'm disabled and sleep poorly due to pain. The only step-free homes are apartments in noisy areas.

The urban planning profession in Canada needs to take a long look in the mirror if Edmonton, one of our more progressive cities for this, thinks that stacking renters on polluted arterial roads is an ok trade-off to appease homeowners. It is a public health disaster of a policy.
