15mph for bikes is way too low. Bikes are quite light/smsll and not dangerous at higher speeds.

Just one more subsidy bro. Just one more. Hasn’t worked for centuries but it’ll work this time. I can just feel it. At what point do you start to actually help your voters instead of rural whites.

10.01.2026 22:51 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I just don’t think we need to spend political capital on subsidizing the people who want to execute us. But that’s another way to put it sure.

10.01.2026 20:24 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Great for them! But rural areas are already massively subsidized here in the US and vote for the worst people I know, so not sure why I need to keep paying taxes to ensure they get 1 train a week to call there.

Megabus folding is fine with me. I can still buy extremely cheap intercity bus tickets bcs of all the competition. It’s just part of the game

Long distance routes as political patronage hasn’t worked for decades, why would it start working now? We’re BARELY managing to get gateway over the line after how many decades? I’m going to die before we see CT rail straightened.

Trains aren’t a good in and of themselves. As much as I love them, If they’re losing money, that money should either be kept in people’s pockets or better spent on welfare.

10.01.2026 19:55 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

IIRC some of these companies were bought out by PE and their stops are being sold for the underlying real estate value. Trimming routes is pretty normal in this space. Amtrak should try doing that!! I’m a foamer like any other, but money losing routes shouldn’t exist.

10.01.2026 19:54 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah basically my experience. It’s…fine. You’re getting from point a to b and not much else. But I resent that Amtrak is allowed to be so bad AND lose money while doing it

10.01.2026 19:51 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I don’t think the default experience of privatization is β€œthe service gets worse”. The UK experience actually saw passenger numbers soar. Regardless, if we get massive cuts to money losing services and nothing else change? Still a win.

I knew Tyler Cowen was a total fraud when he opposed congestion pricing in NYC.

an economist opposing congestion pricing is like a biologist refusing to believe in evolution.

direct proof of being an ideological hack and all-around moron

Interesting. I mostly take megabus and don’t see that. They leave habitually late IME

Overselling seats like an airline? I believe that for sure. But that’s part of keeping ticket prices low. Regardless, greyhound is a profitable company that treats its customers badly. Amtrak is a company that loses taxpayers money AND treats them badly to boot.

10.01.2026 19:40 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Idts actually. You think greyhound is denying boarding to passengers before the bus is scheduled to leave? I’ve never seen it.

Also rail privatization in the UK didn’t fail? Would love to see you show your work there. Rail passenger numbers boomed under privatization.

Highways being built to serve rural towns and losing hundreds of millions of dollars is bad too! I don’t see why we need to bend over backwards to serve unprofitable areas and routes. Texas does toll roads extensively and we’d probably be better off if we did the same.

10.01.2026 19:26 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Direct incentive to not run bad service on your best line. Getting rid of stuff like queueing to get on a train instead of waiting on the platform. Management doesn’t care and Amtrak is run like a charity for towns in the middle of nowhere

10.01.2026 18:38 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

They need to be privatized tbh. Amtrak is run so badly.
