Oh, I get it. I also don't necessarily get the boat reference in their name. I see the iridescence in both the Common and Boat-tail, depending on the light. So many colors.

Thanks. Was happy to see the bird land so close. I took 5-6 pics. It looked like a Boat-Tailed to me & checked each on the ID & it came back as Boat-Tailed. I see Common Grackles here too but the ones I see have yellow eyes and are not as boisterous. What kind of Grackle are you thinking it is?

The Blue Jays here do the same, as do many other birds. They’ll do whatever they feel it takes to protect their young. I was once divebombed by a Grackle who apparently had a nest close to where I walked. I also watched a pair of Mockingbirds swoop a big iguana who ran under a parked car to escape.

I love watching Blue Jays ... but have never seen a Stellar Jay, except in pics.
