I have a low spice tolerance so that Schezwan sauce was my nemesis. Years later when I visited Chengdu I was surprised to discover that I have quite a good tolerance for the actual Sichuan pepper 😂
Ahh! There are two kinds of Indian Chinese. One is the older fusion cuisine from the Chinese diaspora in Kolkata, the other is modern fusion from other parts of India. The kind I grew up eating had less gravy but could be spicy with "Schezwan" sauce, which I think was just made with chilies.
And now I live in a part of the city that has Dominican Chinese food, and I mean... a lot of fried chicken is involved 😭
The Chinese community was/is concentrated mostly around what's now the Indian part of Bengal. Kolkata is probably the only South Asian city to have a Chinatown. In NYC you can even find Indian Chinese food, mostly in South Asian neighborhoods!

This was my first publication in Chinese. The excitement of seeing my byline in a new language never fades! It was surreal enough in English to write about the first storybook I ever owned: Thakumar Jhuli, which my dad got me for my 6th birthday. Doubly surreal to see that cover in a Chinese mag.
I'm glad that 0GSF dated the essay because I wrote it *just before* there was a BIG boom of South Asian authors in international sff. I was fairly comprehensive about the older literature but if you don't see some of your favorite current #SouthAsianSpecFic writers here, that is why!
One more translation to celebrate! As a sweet beginning to 2025 my two-part essay "A Short History of South Asian Speculative Fiction" was published in Chinese (Mandarin) by the Hugo Award-winning writer and editor @riverflowsf.bsky.social in Zero Gravity Science Fiction.
