Who is Nakagawa Mamoru?
A Living National Treasure in metalwork, Nakagawa revitalized the zōgan (metal inlay) technique by infusing color into a historically monochrome craft. Designated at just 56, he remains one of the youngest to hold this honor in Japan. His works—like Vase “Calm Sea”, Vase “Hayashi (Trees)”, and of course this one Vase "Rough Coast"—showcase exceptional skill and innovation.

Based in Kanazawa, Nakagawa studied the local Kaga inlay technique (originally developed in the seventeenth century) starting in 1974, under the well-known metal artist Takahashi Kaishū (1905–2004). In 2004 Nakagawa was recognized as a Living National Treasure for his mastery of chiseling (chōkin) and metal inlay (zōgan). Over the years he has revitalized and modernized the traditions of the art form. He uses numerous metal types and alloys to create a vibrant, dynamic surface through precisely cut and inlayed segments.

Julio González was born in Barcelona on September 21, 1876. With his older brother Joan he worked in his father’s metalsmith shop; during the evenings they took classes at the Escuela de Bellas Artes. González exhibited metalwork at the Exposición de bellas artes e industrias artísticas in Barcelona in 1892, 1896, and 1898, and at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. In 1897 he began to frequent Els Quatre Gats, a café in Barcelona, where he met Pablo Picasso.

In 1900 González moved to Paris; there he began to associate with Pablo Gargallo, Juan Gris, Manolo Hugué, Max Jacob, and Jaime Sabartés. His first embossed metalwork was produced in 1900. He exhibited with the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1903, 1909, and frequently during the early 1920s. González participated in the Salon des Indépendants in 1907 and occasionally thereafter. He first exhibited paintings at the Salon d’Automne in 1909, and showed both sculpture and paintings there regularly in the 1910s and 1920s. In 1918 González worked at the Renault factory at Boulogne-Billancourt, where he learned the techniques of autogenous welding he used later in iron sculptures. In 1920 he became reacquainted with Picasso.

González’s first solo exhibition, which included paintings, sculptures, drawings, jewelry, and objets d’art, was held in 1922 at the Galerie Povolovsky in Paris. The following year he was given a solo show of works in similarly varied media at the Galerie du Caméléon in Paris. In 1923 González participated in the first Salon du Montparnasse, Paris, with Raoul Dufy, Paco Durrio, Friesz, and others. In 1924 he was included in the exhibition Les Amis du Montparnasse at the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d’Automne in Paris. He made his first iron sculptures in 1927. From 1928 to 1931 González provided technical assistance to Picasso in executing sculptures in iron.

A striking vintage 1980s handmade hand fabricated mixed metals pewter bronze and copper geometric post-modernist box by acclaimed American artist/metalsmith Jon Michael Route of Wisconsin. Entirely handmade likely a one of a kind object with hinged lid decorated in a geometric design with copper and bronze sections, and with black velvet-lined interior. Really a work of art that has a practical use as well!
This outstanding post-modernist box measures 6.25" across by 3-1/8" by 1-1/8" tall at edges. It weighs 380 grams or about 13.5 ounces total prior to packing. Marked at bottom as shown, "Pewter" with the copyright symbol, and "Jon Michael Route" underneath. I haven't attempted to polish this box leaving that decision up to the new owner. Excellent vintage condition.

This naturalistic head was originally part of a larger figure that unfortunately has probably been lost to time, depriving scholars of the ability to fully understand how the work would have engaged its creators. Nevertheless, the quality and precision of the piece reflect the intense level of skill and knowledge of stone that Aztec (or Mexica) and other Mesoamerican artisans had cultivated over millennia. Finally, the facial expression and mouth appearing to be frozen in speech still convey a sense of the power and permanence that Mexica artists often sought to capture and transmit to their contemporaries and to future generations.

Musée des beaux-arts curator Stephane Aquin recalls Mr. Archambault as an intense perfectionist: “He created from a plan and never varied from his vision. There was a surgical precision about his work that bordered on obsessive. While we were setting up the show, Archambault was constantly tinkering with the display. The works are colossal and very difficult to set up. But Louis would look at something and insist that it had to be moved a few inches to the left or the right. He didn’t care how many extra hours of work it might take. The end product had to match that vision that lived inside his head.”

Elegant in his mind and his manners, Mr. Archambault was always a gentleman: honest, loyal and authentic. In his sculpture, he sought out the spiritual, while in his heart he remained a purist. Near the end, he was a frail and soft-spoken man with thin white hair and a thin white beard. His voice was shaky but it was filled with a lifetime of love and admiration for his dear wife Mariette.

A one of a kind set of vintage 1980s Jon Michael Route USA handmade mixed metals pewter and bronze angular geometric post-modernist design coffeepot teapot and tray.
The coffee pot stands 10.5" tall by 7" from spout to tip of handle by 4" widest point. The tea pot stands 6" tall by 9" from tip of spout to tip of handle by 4" widest point. All three pieces are fully hand-signed and dated "1989" at bottom as shown in my photos. The set weighs just under 6 pounds total prior to packing. I haven't attempted to polish the set leaving that decision up to the new owner. Pewter is a soft metal, and this set was no doubt used by the original owners, and thus has accrued some fine pointed dings and light scratches and tarnish throughout, but nothing that can't be polished away if you want it to appear like new. Excellent vintage condition.

Jon Route has been a metalsmith working commercially, academically and independently, for over 45 years. Born in 1954, he received a BS in Art from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Jon worked in an architectural metals firm and as a jeweler before striking out on his own as an independent craft-artist. He has been invited twice to teach at U-W-Stout, Menomonie, Wisconsin as an adjunct professor and sabbatical replacement and has given many workshops throughout his career on the technical aspects of his craft. He has exhibited his hand constructed vessel forms, teapots and wall pieces at some of the best art/craft festival events in the United States including the Cherry Creek Arts Festival, the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, the American Craft Expo in Evanston, the Philadelphia Craft Show, and the Smithsonian Craft Show. He is a 1998 recipient of a Wisconsin Individual Artist Fellowship and one of his pewter teapots was featured in Metalsmith Magazine’s 2001 “Exhibition in Print”.
Route’s work was chosen in 2001 to be included at the American Craft Museum in New York in an exhibition entitled “Objects for Use: Handmade By Design”, and the accompanying book published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Paul Smith, Director Emeritus, American Craft Museum, and General Editor. In 2006, Jon was invited to participate in an exhibition honoring the 28-year teaching collaboration between Fred Fenster and Eleanor Moty in the University of Wisconsin, Madison Art Metals program, organized by the Chazen Museum of Art, U-W Madison, Wisconsin, and at an exhibition at the West Bend Art Museum entitled “Time For A Nice Cuppa: Wisconsin Teapots”, in West Bend, Wisconsin. In 2009 Jon was invited by the Charles Allis Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to exhibit a retrospective of his work in his first solo museum show entitled, “For the Love of Metal”.

Delaunay’s innovative explorations of color and form were integral to the development of abstract art in the early 20th century.

Initially inspired by quilt patterns, Delaunay eventually incorporated the stylistic concerns of Cubism, Fauvism, and Futurism into her bright, geometric paintings and prints. She variously dubbed her style “Orphism” or “Simultaneism” and focused on the possibilities of color combinations.

In 1964, Delaunay became the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre. Her work would later be shown at institutions including the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Delaunay also worked in fashion, interior design, graphics, collage, bookmaking, and textiles, and blurred the boundaries between these disciplines and fine art.
