Mostly I remember my mom yelling at the tornado to go around because our house insurance policy hadn't kicked in yet. (Reader, the tornado did in fact go around despite prevailing winds.)
To add to the storm chasing note, two weeks after I helped my parents move into their new house, the Lawrence-Linwood EF4 went by within view of our bay window. If that wasn't the most poignant 'welcome to Kansas' moment, I don't know what else is.

And to add to that, if you want to get symbolic, tornadoes notoriously do not care who or what is in their way. So I feel like people joking we deserve disaster aren't so different. They don't care who is hurt, so long as they're standing within a state border. 6/
I saw someone joking about Kansas deserving more tornadoes for this, but on a serious note against a joke, I'm a storm chaser and I have seen so much good in the community after a storm here. People come together in ways just this side of miraculous when disaster hits. 5/
I moved here in 2020 to stay with my parents during the pandemic. I'm coming up on my sixth year here, and I've stayed because I truly do love this state (except the summers). I've seen people do amazing things here, and my own expectations have been surpassed again and again. 4/

Against expectations, we elected a Democrat governor. My Congressional representative is Sharice Davids, for heaven's sake. I work in Overland Park and have had a full view of every protest along Metcalf Avenue. This is not a state that isn't trying. 2/
As a Kansan (transplanted Michigander, to be specific), I feel like the posts saying that nothing should have been expected of Kansas are forgetting that not that long ago, Kansas voted against expectations on the pro-choice bill. We're capable people. Many of us want to do the right thing. 1/

the "hockey ball" that hockey fans refer to is hardly a ball at all. the top and bottom have been sliced down, rendering it more of a disc-like projectile, but it typically moves so quickly that few observers ever notice. the remainder is used to manufacture goalie shelters at each end of the rink
