I know. I’m an immigrant myself. I just hold out hope that things will change for the better, and was relieved that it wasn’t as bad as the post first suggested. That would have devastated my department’s masters programs.

CSI/CUNY, geologist, way too old to be tenure track but here I am. Research interests in sedimentology and geochemistry. Swim/bike/run/ski. she/her/hers. Views my own. From Scotland, now split my time between southern Vermont and Staten Island, NY.

This list only relates to immigrant visas. Students, researchers and faculty on F, J and H1B visas are not affected.

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick.
Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.

It seems people are already moving to Amtrak. I’m a regular train user, and suddenly realized that I need to book 7 - 10 days ahead instead of 2, even for midweek.

As people get more & more obsessed with ‘big’ data and new tech for gathering loads of data
It is worth remembering that science is about asking useful questions & gathering the right data to answer them

Thanks for posting. I’ve worked extensively on surveys of Oakland Beach, so will take a detailed look at this.
I’m one of those subway users. Most dangerous part of my journey is crossing the street with the walk sign.
In the 1980s the focus was specifically on getting girls into engineering - so I became a geologist!
I worked on geochemical modeling for the Nirex proposal back in the 90’s and was surprised to see a return to the same location, as the reason that didn’t go ahead was fundamentally geological. But I haven’t really been following the story since returning to academia and emigrating.

My daughter used to do the same as a young kid. I’d watch her face carefully at all times, and the lifeguards got to know us. I reminded her about it when she became a lifeguard as a teenager, and she was horrified!
Sorry to hear this. I remember him well from the Geologists Association and my time at UCL.

Scotland should take a look at Vermont’s program to distribute battery storage to homes, with the added benefits of a backup power supply during storms, and the option to integrate with rooftop solar.

Sorry this happened. I really enjoyed your talk on Tuesday, that was pitched perfectly for our students.
We installed a white metal roof on our home in Vermont 2 years ago, and I haven’t used an air conditioner on the upper level of the house since.
We had 33 kids in primary school in the late 70’s. As an adult, I marvel at how innovative our teachers were at running an engaging, fear free classroom with differentiation for kids of different abilities. Lots of organized physical activity during the day definitely helped.
